Beyond The Struttopshere is a sonic collaboration between Leo Strutt (Strutt Bros DJs) and Ben Chetwood (Flying Mojito Bros, Damian Lazarus’s Ancient Moons) aimed at channelling their considerable musical production experience and boundless love of cosmic chugging dark disco. Their debut EP, New Frontier, was released on Gouranga in late 2020 and featured remixes from heavyweights of the scene: James Rod, Mufti and K-Effect. The title track found much acclaim among Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston’s A Love From Outer Space online fraternity and was featured in The Juan Mclean’s (DFA Records) contribution to Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space mix series. In 2021, the boys released their second EP, ‘Celestial Drift’, on Mélopée Records with Mexican dark disco wizard Roliva delivering a stellar remix. They then featured on Mélopée’s inaugural VA compilation, with the ZZ Top inspired ‘Pontiac Firebird’, and later that year performed remix duties for hybrid alien rock trailblazers, aka The Menzia, on Ilya Santana’s comic disco imprint (Astrolead Recordings). 

Their now trademark sound combines fat chugging basslines with reverbed guitar riffs, 80s-tinged cosmic synths, crunchy power cords, gnarly arpeggiators, spacey 303s, Italo drum fills, and swirling psychedelic delay lines. The boys have a busy year ahead with another hotly anticipated release on Gouranga, now their flagship label, as well as guest mixes on IN DARK WE TRUST, Counterterraism and Heartwood FM. This summer you can catch them DJ’ing at Glastonbury’s infamous Rabbit Hole, Noisily, Secret Garden Party and Heartwood Festival. Rheinzand’s retrofuturisic Ibiza-ode gets a visit from Pete Blaker, the dutch DJ and producer whose tunes have been lighting up Ibiza dance floors for the past couple of years. Blaker unwinds the jazzy instrumental, dispersing it in soft ribbons of sound over a blissed-out ambient scenery. An aquatic, meditative, gently psychedelic vibe.

Just in time for summer, Pampa issued Aimlessness, the long-awaited new album from Dntel AKA Los Angeles producer Jimmy Tamborello. His latest electronic suite brought forth stronger leanings toward house grooves, building upon the pop and IDM approaches he explored earlier in his career as half of the Postal Service and a member of Figurine – with a healthy dose of Pampa otherworldliness on top. 

Now, Robag Wruhme steps in and recontextualizes two Aimlessness cuts for a remix EP. Wruhme is already a beloved member of DJ Koze’s extended family, having released the full-length Thora Vukk about one year ago, which was deemed “another success for both him and Pampa” in Resident Advisor’s four-star review.

First up is Robag’s “Kloff Mottüré” mix of “Bright Night”, a starry-eyed transformation of Dntel’s work that twinkles like fireflies in the clear midnight sky. With symphonic splashes, playful pitter-patters and a tranquil breakdown, it sounds a bit like teenage toads skinny-dipping amongst the lilypads.

Next up, Robag finds inspiration in Dntel’s “Jitters”, not once but twice:  The “Marf Labo” mix takes the title quite literally, offering a jittery breakbeat interpretation with a metallic angel chorus swirling over the haphazard beats. Finally, on the flip side, the “Emmens Worsch” mix brings things more closely aligned with the grooving, heartfelt house thump that Pampa has engendered. It’s the EP’s most DJ-friendly cut, while at the same time showing off Robag’s gentle production touches and letting Tamborello’s sweet, subdued voice shine through.
