SMEGMA/SATURN AND THE SUN (edit of iDEAL207 7")

‘Forest of Tines - Egil Kalman plays the Buchla 200’ is a 2xLP follow up to the
2022 solo debut ‘Kingdom of Bells - Egil Kalman plays the Synthi 100’ also
released on iDeal Recordings.

The record documents Egil Kalman’s encounter with a large Buchla 200 system
from the 1970s, housed at Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) in Stockholm and was
made during a residency from the 21st of October to 7th of November 2021.
During its over one hour runtime the music flows between just tuned drones,
pointillistic improvisations, hypnotic ostinatos and traditional Scandinavian folk
tunes. Highlighting Kalman’s varied musical interests as well as the vast sonic
potential of this legendary instrument.

All the tracks were captured live without any overdubs from the Buchla 200 as
two stereo recordings, one dry and one through an AKG BX20 spring reverb.
With additional control voltage supplied by a eurorack modular system.
Pre-recorded drums (processed through the Buchla) on ‘Drums’ by E.K.
Egil Kalman’s synth and double bass playing can also be heard in duos with Zoi
Efstathiou and Fredrik Rasten as well as in groups such as Miman, Marthe Lea
Band and Alasdair Roberts & Völvur.

The record was mastered by Rashad Becker and the artwork is made by Allon
Kaye. All music by E.K. besides the traditional melodies on ‘Blågeten’ and
‘Polska’.
