Natalia Laguens - Rooms (2018)

Running late with this mix due to a lack of internet access at the new apartment in New York, but we have mix number 10 from another recent New York transplant Kyle Flanagan. The first instance of Kyle and I interacting in person was at a Container show with Dyrt, Coteries, and Predation playing as well. Kyle was as friendly as could be and we talked about the arrangement of the show and how great everyone sounded. Since then we would bump into each other at shows as well as exchange music on Messenger. Kyle quickly became one of my favorite artists in Richmond as well as one of my favorites in general. His cassette "Hole In My Head" for Hot Releases was one that I discussed at length with a lot of other listeners who had also heard it and agreed it stood head and shoulders above most cassette culture engagements these days. Aside from his solo work, Kyle performs regularly with the psyjazz outfit Crazy Doberman that collectively rotates between members but is maintained entirely by Drew Davis. 

I think one of my favorite things about collaborating with and just plain interacting with Kyle is his extremely even-keeled, anxiety-free presence. When we first performed live I was floored by the fact that he was able to cut and connect a cassette tape loop without his hands shaking, which is a life-long problem for me. He can also tell a story with such an even and engaging tone that the context of the story doesn't seem insane at all. When he explained to me almost being tossed down a flight of stairs by a straight-edge noise bro after playing a blender to pieces in said noise-bro's space, I nodded my head along as if it wasn't one of the wildest stories I have ever heard. The same goes for this mix: a tape driven junk yard with bits of GG Allin's last performances intertwined, it'll wake you up better than a cup of coffee with cream, sugar, and psilocyben.
