NRG | Session 019 (BPM 146)

Some 20 years ago, at the turn of the millennium, Sydney was world-famous for its 24-hour bars and epic dance parties. Sydney was the most lively city in the world where people queued 24/7 to get into clubs - before Nanny State laws closed 176 venues and destroyed its nightlife forever.

Tunnel Nightclub, open in the late '80s by Ibrahim, was accessible from a laneway and championed a 'female majority' policy - a breath of fresh air for women in the pre #MeToo era.

It was rebranded EP1 in the late nineties and early noughties, then Dragonfly from 2004-2010, before becoming Tunnel again and then closing for good as the owners threw up their hands in frustration. This mix is the second part of my tribute to EP1, arguably my favourite Sunday night during its era.

House | Session 008 (BPM 130)

In the 1990s, Potts Point and Kings Cross were all about the big night out. When Sydney celebrated, this is where it happened. If the big night happened elsewhere, it was where you inevitably ended up in the wee hours of the morning. Most had disappeared by the 2010s when Sydney’s strict lockout laws made Kings Cross a less attractive destination for revellers. Many have since been redeveloped into residential apartments.

This "Memories Session" is the last mix in the trilogy set dedicated to EP1 Sundays, the best Sunday night in NSW.

Some of you may remember One World Sport at the 1800 square metre building located in the Darling Walk Complex at the southern end of Darling Harbour in Sydney. One World Sport was Sydney’s original sports themed venue hosting a variety of functions and events. It was divided into several area with an outdoor terrace, bar, gaming lounge, pool tables, restaurants, and a VIP room. It offered a state-of-the-art audio-visual system including 60 screens televising sports from around the world. 

I’ll always remember One World as being the place we would go without being worried about the door policy. This led to so many great nights and so many new friends in the late 90s and early 2000s.

The 'Memories' sessions finally lands at Sydney’s premier nightclub! Yes, there was a time when people queued, in long snaking lines, to get into DCM. The huge DCM site, located at the lower end of Oxford Street, was renowned for its superior sound system, professional lighting and acres of space for uninhibited dancing.

This mix is for the people who love ‘DCM’, who keep the memories alive. Its thanks to you all that this mix came together. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed mixing it 😊

February 2023, the beginning of the end for places like the Daintree and One World Sport. What was supposed to be the mecca for Sydney tourism and entertainment showpiece in Darling Harbour / Cockle Bay. With the anchor tenant (Sega World) gone three years before, the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, began considering various redevelopment options as part of the planned rejuvenation of the precinct. 

This all came too late for the Daintree Café, who had closed earlier in the month after the owner’s business had gone into administration. Here is a throwback to better times in Darling Harbour and what things were like before the precinct was shut down.

And that is exactly what I did, this is me cutting it old school for a new generation of kids. This completes the set (3 months later).

Before I begin, I just want to put a disclaimer out there that this 'NRG Session' is not mixed by me but mixed by DJ Paul Astro.

Not only is Paul a great guy, but he was renowned for being one of Sydney’s premier DJs in the 90s and early 2000s. This mix, from around 2000 typifies why people want to see him back, doing what he does best! I've stumbled across it and it is too good not to share. Listen to the maestro go to work. Enjoy!

This legendary Taylor Square hotel boasts a treasure trove of treats and an intriguing history. The Chapel on the ground floor, with its high and ornate Art Deco ceilings, is a striking tribute to the building's history as a funeral parlour. It was the headquarters of Charles Kinsela from 1933 until 1982, before it was redeveloped to a pub.

Kinselas, notorious party starters taking over the top floor and the middle bar every Saturday night. You could expect non-stop bangers and house music all night long, along with show-stopping production numbers and drag go-go dancers. ‘NRG Session 031’, taking you on another trip down memory lane.

Oxford Street was the pinnacle of all things fun and exciting, giving partygoers a field day just to get in the door of these floor filling venues and nights. The revellers all cued the doors from opening time until the early hours of the morning. Most venues were known for the best in classic old school NRG and Trance in the early 1990s through to the 2000s and became the cornerstone for the dance music revolution. It was no wonder that clubs along the Oxford Street strip had regular patrons showing up, week after week. Session 032 is a homage to all things Oxford Street.

Although I eventually went towards to NRG club scene, here is a rare recording where it all began. At this stage, I was being taught by KC (Winner 1992 & 1993 DMC Australia Champion and World Finalist in 1992) how to beat juggle and scratch on the SL-1200 MK2 (which I still use to this day).

It was an extra special time because Jam Master Jay of Run DMC had come by to record a segment for Channel V, so I got to meet him in person! This comes in 2 parts are the sessions were recorded on 30 minute tapes. This is part 1 of 2.

Our nights often started on Oxford Street. Rock up to the Temple or Rogues in time to catch some drinks with friends and get the night started. Stay until the early hours of the morning and hike over to Black Market, finding yourself checking your pockets for enough spare change to by a pair of $10 sunglasses for the trek over. Alternatively, you might find yourself hunting a kebab down on Oxford Street, hooking left towards the glow of the Coke sign for a slow persistent crawl towards the heart of Potts Point. How good was life in the 90s and early 2000s. Session 034 celebrates good times, in arguably the best era in Sydney’s nightlife.
