What do you do when pain blots out joy? How do you learn to take care of yourself? What happens when the things you think are helping end up doing the most harm? 'Auto-Pain' is the Sophomore album from Deeper, a record that finds the band embracing open space, using synths to create shadows where bricks of guitars once would’ve blocked out the sun. The group — singer and guitarist Nic Gohl, bassist Drew McBride, and drummer Shiraz Bhatti — were all graduates of Chicago’s rich DIY scene who came together around their love of Wire, Devo, Gang of Four, and Television. While the new record is still within the Great Lakes post-punk tradition of their debut, the album isn’t as insular as its predecessor; it’s less interested in pile-driving and more willing to dwell in liminal spaces. Guitars enter the picture precisely, locked bass grooves propel things forward. Drummer Shiraz Bhatti, who is half-Pakistani and half-Native American, embraced the drumming patterns he’d heard growing up at pow-wows, channeling the anxieties of his heritage into his playing and keeping the group grounded when they switch into all-out percussive attack. The result is an album both more nuanced and catchy.Auto-Pain represents the constant wave of depression felt by many in everyday life. Stemmed from Aldous Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’, Auto-Pain is a concept meant to be an inverse to soma, a pill in the book which makes everything numb. The idea of auto-pain is to epitomize the desire to return to a connection with thoughts and clarity, which comes at the expense of feeling everything simultaneously. The album artwork features the now-demolished Prentice Women’s Hospital in Chicago capturing the band’s rounded-off brutalism, and the album title appears in Urdu, a nod to drummer Shiraz Bhatti’s Pakistani heritage. The record was recorded and mixed by Chicago scene luminary Dave Vetraino (Lala Lala, Dehd) and mastered at Chicago Mastering by Greg Obis (Ne-Hi, Melkbelly).

Eckhardt And The House is uptempo and danceable indie music with elements from pop to avant-garde to disco-funk, all twisted up into a signature sound with wild experimentation and disregard for the norm.

For new single What Did My Arms Eckhardt And The House found inspiration in a quote by American poet and novelist Silvia Plath: "What did my arms do before they held you", featured in the New York Times under a photo about the 2013 Dhaka garment factory collapse. The photo showed 2 victims that were found from from under the rubble - a girl and a boy that were colleagues. The boy had his arms around her - and that was how death had come over them. A moving picture but romantic in a way, particularly with that quote. The song is not about that photo or the poor working conditions in the factories of Bangladesh, but it was one source of inspiration.

What Did My Arms is another great example of the distinctive Eckhardt sound: nu-disco where Metronomy meets Prince - with hints of Tame Impala in the bass.

With fourteen singles and an album under their belt, the band scored iTunes chart positions in ten European countries plus Turkey, Brazil, South Africa and Japan, Spotify charts in The Netherlands, France, Italy and Turkey. In the past 12 months the band got 661 plays across 27 radio stations in 11 countries. Total Spotify streams are now up to 2.1 million.

Featuring three brand new instrumental tracks, the 'Golden Cage' EP sees Bernhardt venture into more introspective territory, eschewing the more upfront pop direction of recent collaboration with Panama, 'Electric Blue', for something softer and more intimate. Closing the EP we have 'Mercury Moments' which injects the susurration of distant voices into the mix of sparkling melodies, echoing chimes and finger clicking rhythms to stunning, emotive, effect.

Powering on from their successful year of releases, the Berlin-based duo Local Suicide have teamed up with Kalipo, the Bavarian producer whose downbeat, hazy tracks are renowned for their electric melancholy vibes.

Releasing on Hold Your Ground, a sublabel of Audiolith, that credits a wide range of countries and influences to bring them the best electronic sounds from around the world, allows for the diverse talent on the EP to take centre stage.

The two tracks Dominator and Crocodile ooze new wave nostalgia and confront us with the metaphorical vocals that reminisce in our experiences as humans. Dominator's syncopated kicks and synths march toward you like a band of dancers, while the sassy vocals inspire that feeling of rebellion and seduction. Crocodile is a much grizzlier track, with the synths resonance taking full effect on your ears as the succinct vocals chant to you like they are coming from within.

Mateo González - who the duo know well from collaborating with on previous projects such as last year's track Komm Ins Loch - has taken Dominator in his stride and given us 2 remixes from his ulterior aliases. The Theus Mago remix is a harrowing acid-trip take on the track; dipping its metaphorical toe into the dark and mysterious pool of techno that he approaches his remix's with. Keeping the vocals isolated and minimal, the track glitches into a world of its own interpreting and digesting its own melody and rhythm. Bufi's remix hits us with housey and disco claps and cowbells, bringing us into a bohemium jungle, full of exotic but intriguing ingredients that overcome all the senses.

The final remix on the EP is Saint Petersburg's Radial Gaze's take on Crocodile. The track, in a major key, incorporates laser synths that shoot out in every direction, while the manipulated voice that lures you into the climax of the track is met with ringing percussion; keeping those same grizzly kicks from the original track

A superb compilation of electronic and new wave sounds, intended to tempt each listener whatever their musical pleasures. The nostalgia-inducing project is set to be released on the 7th of February 2020, on Hold Your Ground
