Alta California, the new bilingual album by The Soft White Sixties, finds the Los Angeles 5-piece expanding upon their contemporary concoction of rock ‘n’ roll and soul while also exploring some of their most relevant lyrical content to date (in both English and Spanish).

Produced by Elijah Thomson (Father John Misty, Delta Spirit, Richard Swift), Alta California was written and recorded at New Monkey Studio, a room formerly owned by Elliott Smith, over the course of several sessions that began on Election Night 2016.  Lead singer Octavio Genera — a first generation Mexican-American who grew up in a bilingual Spanish/English family – always wondered what it would be like to sing in Spanish, it just didn’t occur to him to try it professionally, and he wasn’t sure there was space for it within the band. “Speaking and singing in a language are two different things,” says Genera. “There was a feeling of joy and passion when I sang these songs in Spanish that I wasn’t expecting. And then hearing the songs back — it was right.”

The sweaty, gyrating energy of their live show has garnered praise from Rolling Stone, Paste Magazine, and LA Weekly over the years and landed them on club and festival bills like Outside Lands, BottleRock, and SXSW, sharing the stage with the likes of The Hives, Rival Sons, The Flaming Lips, and Paul McCartney.  But this time around, it all glimmers with a subtle lysergic sheen, thanks in part to Thomson’s influence.  “Eli was a big proponent of making the studio feel like 2am on a Saturday night at all hours of the day,” multi-instrumentalist Aaron Eisenberg explains.  “Certain songs called for certain states of mind and sobriety generally didn’t factor into the equation.”

The band felt it would be irresponsible to develop lyrical content that ignored the inescapable global climate developing literally while the tape was rolling.  New territory was explored, as observations on the despair of the American Dream ('Reaganomixxx'), immigration ('Brick by Brick'), gentrification ('I Still Love You, San Francisco'), paradigm shifts ('Teen Wolves'), generational and ideological gaps and what happens when one generation begins to the feel the inevitable changing of the guard crept its way onto the record.

Packed with deep, thunderous grooves from the rhythm section of Joey Bustos and Ryan Noble, squealing fuzz guitars and roaring analog synths courtesy of multi-instrumentalists Aaron Eisenberg and Rob Fidel, and the signature soulful rasp of lead vocalist Octavio Genera, Alta California is an honest snapshot of a modern rock band in their prime.

I have brain cancer. My life is on hold while I fight this battle. Most days, I win, some days, I lose, but we always fight. This album we are putting together is the brain child of my producer Scott Giggy and anything you like is due to him making me sound better than I am. My little brother Matthew Gehrett (Cyanotypes) is also instrumental as he is my rhythm section and harshest critic. He expects nothing but perfection from me. As he has our entire lives. To these two, my beautiful wife and all my children go all the credit. I'm just singing into a can.

That is not to say that I just started a couple of months ago. I have been studying recording audio since 2003. Without any progress.
After many  demos failed attempts. The first album with help form in 2005. Over the years under various names in a few places have recorded & mixed many demos 2 albums. Moved on to other projects.

Garage/Psych/Punk

Light Bulb Alley are a Rock ‘N’ Roll band from Montreal that has existed for over 10 years. Their last release was"The Bright Side Of The Dumpster", It features Chloé Soldevila from ANEMONE on back up voice and Sean Cary Barnard from UUBBUURRUU on guitar. Produced by Daran in Montreal.


The band has shared the stage with Lyres, MOTO, Matadors and toured US, Canada and Mexico.

The group consists of Allister Booth (guitar, vocals), Sean Cary Barnard (guitar) and many members throughout the years. The band began as an independent act, self-producing their recordings, before they eventually gained popularity in the Montreal Garage/Psych scene. The band's raw garage rock sound draws heavily from Allister's influences of Old Time Blues and 70's Punk. Their debut album, "The Sound of Things", was released by Ricochet Sound (The Gruesomes label) in 2011. Their last release was "The Bright Side of the Dumpster" in 2016.

Light Bulb Alley believes in Rock ‘N’ Roll in its pure form, but does not disqualify the significance of the ever changing currents of new music. They do not believe in dogmatic pureness or regurgitating a carbon copy of what has been done before. Their sound is an alchemy of old and new, darkness and light. This duality is ever changing and never stagnant.

On the Unreleased album (Lights and Shades) Allister Booth sings of progressively breaking free from darkness. The songs, when played live, impact audiences by pulling them into the mysterious poetic lyrics and melodic music. The lyrics are vague and elusive and inspired by dark poets like Jim Morrison, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Light Bulb Alley sees the value and humour of depression and lowly living. Allister is honest and writes about what he has seen in Montreal. They make a positive leap forward towards the light at the end of the tunnel. “Cut Me Loose” is a break up song that hints at making the best out of a bad situation and moving forward. “What You Wanted is What You Get” depicts the night life/underground scene in Montreal and how alluring it could be. Theres also the concept of steering away from dark/party ridden paths and negative aspects of life as alluded to on in “Fly Away You Stupid Ghost”. 

The underground Rock ‘N’ Roll lifestyle is hard, but when articulated in music, it can be cathartic and give people an outlet to groove to. They can be compared to the Cramps, Rolling Stones or Velvet Underground with a modern spark.
