Following on from last years's "Mondo Organico" compilation, the latest Invisible Inc mini-compilation "Mondo Ritmo", as its title suggests, sets its sights firmly on rhythm and percussion.
Featuring a global array of artists hailing from Argentina to Senegal and everywhere inbetween, the influences and styles on display include latin, afro, dub, dancehall, experimental, acid and more and are guaranteed to expand your mind and move your body.
Initially this EP was intended to be Dancefloor Detonators Vol. 3 but things are fluid at INVINC HQ and the EP seemed to mutate as it grew!
However, lacking in dancefloor killers this EP most certainly is not. Proven and tested dancefloor bombs are Mytron & Balam's opening track "Cabasa Loca" which label boss GK Machine has been spinning at his Wrong Party nights and elsewhere for the last 6 months or so, resulting in track ID requests on several occasions...and the house/dancehall hybrid floor filler "Wicked Can't Run" by LA producer Tom Chasteen (Exist Dance/Dub Club) featuring legendary Jamaican DJ and toaster U Brown, and mixed by equally legendary producer/keyboardist David Harrow who first came to our attention through his regular keyboard contributions to all things On-U Sound related in the 1980s.
The rest of the tracks may not be peak time bangers but they are sure to please the more esoteric and adventurous dancefloors out there....it's an honour to have on board Calypso Records head honcho Thomass Jackson, Thomash (Voodoohop) and Gats (Suçuarana / Curuba) who together as Changa Boys bring in Senegalese drummer Ndiaxo dal Jaam, and finally the little-known Machine and percussionist Congo Caveman.

INVINC 38 Gamma Knife - Kuts LP [clips] Out 16 Dec 2024

It’s been a good few years since we've seen a full release from Sordid Sound System aka Stuart Evans on Invisible Inc and the wait is very worth it - it’s a most welcome return.
It's possibly even some of Evans’ best work and so it’s a pleasure to have him back on board the good ship Inc.  
With the ten year anniversary of Invisible Inc coming in May it seems very fitting to include something by Sordid Sound System amongst the flurry of releases coming out in the run-up to that occasion.
Remarkably, this music is even harder to pigeon-hole than usual...even for Stu, who’s known for his raw, analogue, live takes that veer between dub and post-kraut, this is definitely quite "different": part surf acid, part dub, part psych-exotica, part motorik...and that's just the A-side. The B-side leans more towards ambience but of the oddball experimental soundtrack variety...a thoroughly enjoyable ride.

The second volume of Invisible Inc’s 10-year anniversary celebrations has landed, hot on the heels of the scorching first volume.

Where Volume 1 focussed on the dub-style, electronic and ambient side of the label’s output, the second volume leans towards the ‘psych’ side of the label.

As has been a consistent pattern with the label in its decade of existence is its ethos of releasing new and exclusive tracks as well as releasing on vinyl pre-existing tracks that only ever saw the light of day in the digital realm. This compilation is no different. Alongside exclusive new material from Anna vs June, E Ruscha V, Banda Magnética, Exotic Gardens, Kanot and a Coyote remix of Sordid Sound System we also have for the first time on vinyl two tracks by Hena and Futurum that went somewhat under the radar first time round and really deserved to be shared with the wider world.

Hena is Ukrainian producer Volodymyr Gnatenko. I first heard "Nuan" in a mix by Andrea Ida & immediately needed to know what it was. Pure peyote-powered desert music that went under the radar and needed to be heard by more!

"Is It Balearic?" label boss Coyote does the honours and remixes the title track from Sordid Sound System's "Gimme Fever" LP turning it into a hypnotic acid dub mantra.

Swedish duo Kanot are Anton Kolbe (Tross) and Jesper Jarold (Fontän) joining forces to make dreamrock for psychonauts.

Also from Sweden are Futurum who sent me a promo of "Prado" over two years ago. A regular feature in my warm-up DJ sets, it's well overdue it being pressed up on wax!

Exotic Gardens is the alias of Peaking Lights' Aaron Coyes through which he finds a space for acidic experimentation enhanced by live dubstyle mixer operations.

LA-resident Eddie Ruscha, a frequent visitor to the label under his cosmic Secret Circuit alias, appears for the first time under his experimental ambient E Ruscha V moniker.

Banda Magnética is the brainchild of Hugo Capablanca (Discos Capablanca) & Borja Caro (Metametal) offering a mindpuzzler of improvised musique concrète.

Athens-based Anna vs June returns to the fold and closes the proceedings with a song of love, relationships, vulnerability and patience drenched in dreamy electronics.

Javi Redondo releases a 5-track EP on Dischi Autunno featuring 3 originals, with the remaining tracks consisting of remixes of lead track ‘Rythmo’ from Pablo Bozzi (aka Lapse of Reason) and Cosmo Vitelli. The pace across the EP may be quite sedate, but the sounds within are anything but: blending analogue techno manoeuvres with a disco-inflected methodology, the producer paints a picture of prime-time energy with a heaped spoon of fun. 

‘Black 5th’ draws heavily on this energy, static, patient acid jittering forward slowly and with intent as the sci-fi-esque samples and spooked electronics flutter in and out of audibility. ‘Non Sei Qui’ takes the energy out of the stars and into an EBM horror soundtrack, shattered vocal samples and 80’s synth leads bringing the listener deeper into the intensifying groove.

‘Rythmo’ sets the bar, gritty bass sludging past a gate of motorik drums. True to its name, the rhythm develops swiftly, krautrock-edged energy gathering momentum as the percussion suite, faintly coloured with house music tropes, reaches for the stars. 

Pablo Bozzi, in the vein of Space Dimension Controller, adds a cinematic punch to ‘Rythmo’, transforming the original into an enigmatic, almost trance-like piece, while Cosmo Vitelli’s ‘K hole’ remix pulls the other way, using a stylised view of the percussion as an ephemeral layer above treacle-thick bass and whirring, panic-stricken machinery.

Post lockdown does not mean we need to fall back into the same patterns like we did before. This EP contains a smooth transition to a new reality. ULTRATERRENO is TAGLIABUE`s newest EP on the Berlin and Zurich based micro Label Lustpoderosa.

The celestial sounds from the italian producer Tagliabue is a healing process of well tempered analog synthesizers. The cure is in the mix of pre dancefloor and ambient tracks inlcuding a slow trancy chug from well known and apreciated selector Anatolian Weapons.

Tagliabue is not just inspired by the afro cosmic heritage of Beppe Loda and Daniele Baldelli, but also from post-folk, rock, prog and kraut influences of 70’s and early 80’s, passing through New Wave and Synth Pop of Gaznevada or The Stupid Set and not to forget italians rave culture of the 90s with Franceso Farfa and Marco Dionigi just to mention a few.

This very intimate EP is a meditative and transcendental journey to another world. Literally.

PREMIERE: Monty DJ - A2 [Sisyphon]

HRDF: How did you discover the original track? Why did you choose to edit it?

@hanzoandyaman : the story of this edit is very unusual. At the time we started the edit we were living together in Vienna. Yaman discovered the track ''The Groove Is In The Heart'' by Deee-Lite in Hanzo's sample folder. It's such a crazy piece of music that even one short line of the vocals makes you think of several different ways to make something new out of it, which was actually the main motivation to start this project. Then we added some keys on it, which we recorded with an old Casio keyboard from the early 90's which gave the whole sample loop another twist. A big part of the percussions are taken from cooking pots and other gadgets from our kitchen.

Double Geography is Duncan Thornley, one half of Weird Weather who have released EPs on Emotional Response, Going Good and their own Whip+Lash imprint, exploring sometimes hypnotic, sometimes abstract experimental tech-tronica. 

Double Geography, however, takes us deep into the undergrowth, into the world of plants. With tracks named after a variety of flora the music could loosely be described as laidback ‘balearic' . However, where much of that "genre" has spawned so much insipid, mediocre coffee table ‘lounge music', Double Geography has retained that crucial element of psychedelia.
