This is a collaboration with Taylor Brysiewicz.  Upon discovering an adequately functioning upright piano in the basement of the conference room at the Banff Centre (where we were both visiting for a conference on Random Algebraic Geometry), we decided to play some improvisational piano duets which led to this collaborative composition.  Taylor had the foresight to take a quick audio memo on his phone where we recorded a few excerpts alongside some commentary about the chord progression.  After returning home from the conference, Taylor turned our fragments into a completed piano part.  I then added a flute part while trying to maintain the impromptu spirit of the original, namely, by locking in some of the improvised phrases from my early takes (as opposed to indulging in my normal habit of making dozens of rounds of revisions).

WHY IS IT CALLED A PERFECT FIFTH?
The term “perfect” is used to describe the following intervals:

unison,
fourth,
fifth,
octave.
This dates back to medieval times where these intervals were thought of as the most “consonant” and so were named perfect.
The perfect 5th and the perfect 4th are closely related in terms of harmony as the inversion of a perfect 5th is a perfect 4th – e.g. if you invert the interval C-G it becomes G-C (perfect 4th)
