The Kickback

This is the first of a set of four marches for orchestra. The instrumentation is piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, percussion and strings.

March No. 1 in A-flat

This movement is constantly shifting and discovering itself as it unfolds, so I didn’t assign a particular key center to this movement; it is like experiencing the world for the first time with fresh senses. It ends inconclusively, leading to the next movement.

String Trio, First Movement

The pizzicato opening sets up the tone for the main theme in Eb minor in the viola part. After the lyrical middle section, the pizzicatos return later, from which the theme returns in c# minor in the violin part. It ends on the E chord, which acts as a dominant for the next movement.

String Trio, Second Movement

After a brief transition in the character of the first movement (which serves as an introduction), the theme takes off in a whimsical manner. The tonal center (A) of the piece becomes more established as the movement progresses. At the end, the introductory material of the movement is recalled, and becomes resolved.

String Trio, Third Movement

I recently rediscovered this gentle little piece from my youth and thought it might appeal to some folks.

An orchestration of an old piano piece. This is played via Notion 5. The instrumentation is two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, snare drum, cymbals, bass drum and strings.
