This is a flute duet written in my third year of composition classes at UBC. This piece was inspired by an early music history course I have been taking this term - "Oral and Written Traditions in Early Music," taught by Dr. Alex Fisher.

A Minimal Tapestry was written for an ensemble I play in - Spiral. The instrumentation of the ensemble is somewhat flexible, however I chose to write for a triply homogenous ensemble, plus electric guitar. This idea of homogeneity is inspired by the instrument pairing in Balinese Gamelan, and I used these instruments in a way that reflects the registers of a Gamelan ensemble.

I have always had a great affinity with the music of the minimalist movement, I enjoy the music of almost every exponent of this style (Louis Andriessen, Steve Reich, John Adams, Philip Glass, Arvo
Pärt…). In a kind of homage to minimalism, this piece is a tapestry of almost all of the compositional techniques one can find in minimalists works. As such, a great deal of different material was used in a dynamic chain structure, resulting in a paradoxically ‘maximal’ piece. I quickly realised that I prefer the techniques used in minimalism rather than the slowly developing, long-form structures. The piece also takes from Gamelan, which is said to be an ethnomusicological ancestor of minimalism, and a great passion of mine.

Lokisphere is a three-part album of ambient and sci-fi soundscapes. Each piece was composed and then recorded live in a single take, using the "Audioship", a tightly integrated machine of machines. Please see my Facebook page (facebook.com/darkarps) for more.
 
There are no project files, no stems, the tracks have no names. No hours were spent labouring over minute details of the mix, the music emerged in as direct a way as possible, from hand to machine to zeroes and ones, to flow anonymously across the vast wastes of transmitted data, fleeting yet permanent, as music in the digital age.
