This piece was written from a concept of connecting viola and voice, performer and instrument as one.  
The work consists of two parts which at times break off into separate elements and conjoin again. 
Each line crosses over one another, creating a fluidity of roles.  Both viola and voice are treated as equal, yet still unique in character.

First performed in May 2018 at St. Stephen Walbrook Cathedral, London.  Commissioned and performed by Katherine Clarke.

[HOSANNA IN EXCELSIS]
For 14 cellos and 4 trombones and offstage trombone quintet.

A c. 1500 fragment of music from the 'York Masses' (a setting of 'Hosanna in Excelsis') is used for the offstage quintet part. The fragment is sounded twice whilst the rest of the ensemble responds to, and de-constructs the historical sound.

[HOSANNA IN EXCELSIS]

Vocales aims to express a sound that melts the colour of the trombone trio into a single voice. Through blending articulations, textures of different speeds and timbrical manipulation by the wah-mute, Vocales deconstruct the trombone sound as if it was the chant of an Hydra of 3 heads, or a sculpture of the "3 Graces".
