In poker, you double down when you get two aces.  And that's just what we have here...two aces.  Scott Nelson and Mirko Borach.  Both superb musicians and guys who you put money on. We had to team him up with another master on bass, Essen Germany's Mirko Borach, who is well known here on SC as Stringburner https://soundcloud.com/stringburner.  Full credit to these wonderful players as they bring our original Double Down to life with me.  Follow these guys and head back into their galleries here for so many exceptional pieces. It's Sunday and no time better for a little grooving...this one's a little soulful blues and the photo's from the greatest blues club of all, Chicago's Kingston Mines.  When you visit Chicago be sure to go at least one night.  Live blues on two rotating stages from 8p - 4a every night of the year.   And if you can play they often let you sit in.  People all over bringing instruments for late night action.  Named our newest dog Koko Taylor, who's photo in in the poster on the wall - the Queen of Chicago Blues.

Painting a vivid picture in music.
In this track I explore the link between the flamenco style or palo of Tangos and the more Argeninian Tango. Although being linked in name they are very different. A Tango flamenco is more closely linked to the rumba flamenca. Its rhythm is the same as farruca and very lively. The Argentine tango shares a common ancestor, but went its own way. However, it was fun developing the transition between styles. I do that by a dramatic interruption in a Solea por Buleria. It repeats three times with the outro slightly different from the intro and interlude. 
I play three guitar parts here, one in flamenco finger picking style, the others more like the guitar trio with an alternate picking style.

How cool to get the burning side of superb instrumentalists Craig Schmoller on guitar and William Paasche on keyboards.  These guys know so much music and in this original, break out some crazy chops to battle.  Craig is fusion guitar veteran, cutting his chops in the Chicago '80s music scene.  Such deep knowledge of modes and rhythm - check out his instructional videos on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/grov6land - and showcases so much here.  Only 20 year of age and studying music at a top conservatory in Norway, William is off the charts with his synth soloing, as well as his beautiful piano explorations.  Follow both of these guys:

There's a simple reason guitarist Joe Bongiovanni has been a many time finalist in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis - his sound.  Few play blues guitar as Joe can, laying his heart on his sleeve in as little as one note.  It's in the attack, the bend and the choice of notes. On February 8th, pianist, producer and composer  Mark de Clive-Lowe  will release his new album  Heritage  via Ropeadope. For the half-Japanese half-New Zealander who calls Los Angeles home,  Heritage  is a deeply personal exploration of de Clive-Lowe’s ancestry and cultural roots. “ Heritage  is the idea of transmitting from the past to the future - knowing more about who we are and where we’re going by understanding where we come from,” he says. “It’s about identity and one’s place in the world.”

“I was raised bi-culturally and as time goes on, the more I appreciate how much I owe to my roots,” de Clive-Lowe continues. “Japan is my spiritual and ancestral home - the connection I feel there is so visceral and has shaped much of my life, largely without me even being fully aware of its influence. This music is me openly embracing and interpreting what Japan means, feels like and sounds like to me.” De Clive-Lowe is somewhat of a musical chameleon - as comfortable on the grand piano in a jazz club as he is multi-tasking electronics and live beats for a dancefloor. Like his peers Kamasi Washington, Makaya McCraven and Robert Glasper, de Clive-Lowe isn’t content to simply play the jazz lane and he purposefully reaches across a broad palette of genres and influences to create something quite unlike anything else.

“I grew up on a mix of jazz, hip-hop and electronic music, so there’s always all these different sounds in my head,” de Clive-Lowe explains. “Some sounds can be expressed on conventional instruments, some need machines and I’ve developed a hybrid setup to facilitate all of that when I perform. Adding my own cultural story - allowing myself to reflect on and really show my ancestry and roots - feels like I’ve found the missing piece to my own identity and artistry.”

The music reflects his own experiences in Japan (“Memories of Nanzenji” recollecting his visit to the historic Kyoto temple and gardens), the samurai code (“Bushidō” - “The Way of the Warrior”), childhood folk songs (“Akatombo” - an arrangement of a traditional melody as ubiquitous to Japanese people as Twinkle Twinkle is in the west), and more.

Heritage  was recorded live at LA’s Blue Whale jazz club over three nights, as well as one day in a North Hollywood studio. Exactly where the live recording stops and the studio recording starts is all but impossible to tell, with de Clive-Lowe editing the material to purposely blur that line. “The way I incorporate technology is always live - capturing and manipulating moments as they happen in real time - so this record was never about post-production, how you hear it on the album is how it happens live on stage.”

De Clive-Lowe will play  Heritage l ive on  January 12th at SOB’s in Manhattan for Winter Jazzfest , and on  February 8th and 9th at the Blue Whale in Los Angeles. Heritage  is the first in a two part project.  Heritage II  will be unveiled in April 2019.

This time it is all about a 3 note lick, repeated all over the harmonica. With the lick in mind try to hear/feel that you are following the chord progression in a standard 12 bar blues. Because it is played using all 10 holes this will improve your understanding of the layout of the harp and for sure improve your coordination.
It is played on a A harp, the backing track in the key of E is as usual from Jimi Lee ( fabulous tracks!).

The lick has the same note distance no matter where you play it on the harp and creates a nice "mood" when repeated.
It is: starting note + 3 semitones + 2 semitones + starting note repeated.

The exercise is 3x12 bars, followed by a solo based on this lick.

If we had only four letters to describe “Lost Reflections”, the new EP by Mr.Käfer, we would choose J-A-Z-Z. This could easily mislead to the presumption that the “Lost Reflections” EP is a bunch of Lo-Fi beats with a random Bill Evans loop on top of it, glued together by vinyl crackles sampled from YouTube. Something that you don't necessarily need in your playlist in 2019. As a matter of fact the “Lost Reflections” EP is not such a thing, even though it has beatmaker and jazz written all over it. The beatmaker here – Mr. Käfer – loves jazz. 
He discovered Mingus, Coltrane and Miles through his love for Pete Rock, Lord Finesse and The Pharcyde. If you listen to his debut album “Travelin” on Postpartum or put on one of his tracks for Chillhop or Hip Dozer you know the deal.

For his new EP the producer from Salzburg, Austria has teamed up with Californian saxophonist Gavin Lord. Together they have recorded 9 dreamy and slightly melancholic pieces of contemporary beatdriven jazz music. Perfect for the cold season.

Here is Gavin's protocol how the EP came about:
„Lost Reflections is a hodge podge of rainy-day jams and musings. It’s the product of a Californian saxophonist and an Austrian beat maker trying to figure out how to make music together one spring in Salzburg. We met by chance in a burger shop, and thought it would be cool to jam. To be honest, at first we didn’t really know what we were doing; I (Gavin) had only played with jazz combos and swing bands. Karim was a beat maker and rapper. It was a bit of a melancholic time for both of us, and we ended up creating an atmosphere that was sometimes smooth and dark, sometimes twisted and barely restrained. At any rate, we preferred to keep it simple. We would start with a rough idea of the mood we wanted to convey, whether that was a feeling or a sample or a riff, and then we would just jam on it until it felt right. Jamming and improvising with a saxophone and a midi-controller was new for both of us, but very cool and natural. After I moved away, we almost forgot about the tracks and they just sat around for a while. We sometimes talked about them, but between us we didn’t have enough time for the project. Releasing the tracks now is a bit of a nostalgic trip, remembering the Salzburg days and the crew of friends who gave their encouragement and support. Although there are things that we would now change, we put too much love into these tracks to sit on them forever.”

Jazz/Fusion keyboard player, composer and producer.  Marketing, advertising, publishing and sales career.  Originally from Chicago, where I developed a strong appreciation for the blues and classical, and moved to New York, where jazz and the fine arts are so deep.  Key musical influences include Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Zawinul and Weather Report, Chick Corea and Return to Forever, John McLaughlin and the Mahivishnu Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Scott Henderson and Tribal Tech, Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Emily Remler, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Jimmy Smith, Joey DeFrancesco, Larry Young, Buddy Guy, Santana and Earth Wind & Fire.   Former classical clarinet and piano player.  Unless noted, my music on SoundCloud was composed, recorded and performed using only keyboards.  An avid photographer.  Many covers here are my shots.
