Playing With Friends - 2019

It is with great excitement that we release this early version of Hendrix's famous Who Knows, which he recorded in the last year of his life in 1970 with his Band of Gypsies soul band.  We will be releasing the full version in a little bit with Tony Bluestone's strong vocals added, so this is just a tease for all the guitar and Jimi lovers out there.  Hendrix left the groundbreaking Experience band in 1969 and created a soul power trio with his buddies Buddy Miles and Billy Cox.  One album was released - a live album from NY's Madison Square Garden.  This is one of the great tracks from that monumental New Year's Eve night.

This recording features two of my favorite guitarists - Marco Oversteegen and Rients Draasima.  Coincidently both are from the Netherlands.  For me, Marco has the closest sound on SC to where Jimi was, and since Jimi and Miles are my two greatest musical inspirations (of many)it is something very very close to my heart.  No one plays Jimi as Marco does so he was the natural and first choice to join this.  Rients comes from a different harmonic musical world, as you will hear in his soloing and approach.  Extraordinary is a slight understatement.  We've been fortunate to have him join this, as he has been completing what will be a remarkable fusion album that is about to be released.

For this recording Rients was gracious to do the drum programming, I have recorded the bass lines (same as Billy Cox used in the original recordings), and we all solo.  You will hear me with a brief synth solo here while the rest of the playing is Marco and Rients'.

How great to be recording here with Austin, Texas' Jeff Michaels.  Jeff is a serious guitar master, having 6 albums to his credit, and consistently pushing the boundaries of blues.  Heavy electric blues, funky stuff, blues rock, killer Texas shuffles and more, Jeff brings energy and soul to everything he touches.  So I asked him to join me on Dig It, an original modal fusion tune, and he's come back with fantastic playing once again.   Sweet harmonies with his rhythm playing and all those super tasty solo guitar spots interwoven through the jam. Dig It - with Jeff Michaels / guitar

Scott Nelson and I both love Latin music and Latin jazz, so here's Latin Lover.  Scott's https://soundcloud.com/scott-nelson-364333064 a world class guitar player and also plays serious bass here, helping set that deep Latin groove.  Scott describes this as a blending of an Afro Cuban groove, the piano a Cuban "Montuno" and the percussion more of a Bossa Nova.  I just love the sound of Latin jazz flute players so I've tried to mimic them with my synth here.  Scott's wonderful Latin guitar playing is on fire, and he just grooves with those deep bass rhythms and lines.  We know you will dig this.

Latin Lover - with Scott Nelson / guitar and bass

Ba Ba De Bop is what SoundCloud is all about.  A pure collaboration among serious musicians.  Joining me for the first time with a real clear trumpet voice is Andrew "Styrmonix" Styrmo, doing his Miles thing here.   Andrew's also adding some hip vocals, in fact creating the name of the tune, Ba Ba De Bop.  You will hear that in the tune in fun places.  His trumpet -- beautiful tone, cool chromatic playing, and drawing tension with every other note.  Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski holds down one of two serious guitar lines, driving the tune with an infectious wah rhythm track, and also some downright nasty nasty soloing, finding that perfect space between the bass, trumpet and his wah.  And once again, we've got Scott Nelson taking a big guitar solo in the middle section, providing a huge sound and such masterful playing.   This one combines so much of what I love in fusion and also in SoundCloud.  The opportunity to express oneself with other similar minded musicians from around the world.  Pretty cool !  We hope you dig it - stick with it through the end for some funky playing:

It is always something very special to me when the great Alan Schulman and I get together.  Al is one of the most talented and soulful jazz guitarists I've every played with, and he brings so much to this new original Long Time Coming.  Check out Al's superb rhythm guitar playing as well as his super tasty guitar chops and soloing.  Al's shared the stage and performed with guys like Herbie Hancock, Charles Earland, Wynton Marsalis, and Anita Baker, and studied with Pat Metheny and others.  Super talented in digital marketing, super creative and also has a world class knowledge of guitars, and as positive a person as I have ever met.  The real deal.  Currently Al is back from an extended tour of India with his wife Stacey Lynn Schulman, a jazz vocalist extraordinare, and perform regularly together in and around New York City. Long Time Coming - with Al Schulman / guitar

So excited to be releasing our latest original The Journey, with Dan van den Berg on guitar.  This one is extra special to me, not only because it again includes Dan's magical acoustic guitar playing on it, but also because a few weeks ago, while working on his parts for this tune, Dan decided to recreate the entire tune in a flamenco style using three guitar parts, and dedicated the music to me.  It was a huge surprise to me, and one that demonstrates the deep understanding Dan has for music,  his fondness for the passion of music and also for the friendship that we both share.  For our version here, Dan is once again performing on his gorgeous Joan Cashimira acoustic guitar. This is a song i wrote for the climate and its kind of a call and spiritual reminder for the global community to try and bring something together for a while again..
Just remember we all have it with-in our-selfs to try and help and heal others and be aware of our place on this planet that we all have to share and live on.
Unfortunately because of corporate and money making interests and influences its easy to forget what actually matters anymore ,most of us are too busy making money to survive to see what really matters anymore..
The environment is slowly being killed off everyday by what is taken for granted as everyday modern life such as transportation[pollution]
the rainforests cut down for profit and the ice caps melting away that help keep this planet stable ...its easy to think that hey i am safe today and i got my life the way it is ..but tomorrow that could all change ...
Im just a musician who makes sounds that lives in its own universe but i still feel ive got a part to play to at least sing whats on my mind

Lick of the week # 25!! Time to celebrate !!

This week, because it is the 25th time that I published a lick/track/tips etc, I allowed myself to play a solo on a backing track in the key C and I used what seems to be a bit hated harp in the key of F.
 I like F harps a lot, they just have a unique sound and it is certainly not shrill to my ears!  It is a fast swing so I play a lot of rhythm stuff, octaves, double notes, slaps, triplets. 

I hope this brings you back to playing the F harp more often!
BTW, I call this song: Fast and Furious !!

Boson Spin - Deep Beneath The Murky Sea

International Tribe is a weekly mix series hosted by Thris Tian.This week’s International Tribe mix comes from Ishmael Ensemble. 

With a sound that is deeply ingrained in jazz, Ishmael Ensemble combines the worldly timbres of brass, beats and a swirling blizzard of electronics, to create mesmerising and atmospheric soundscapes.

Multi-instrumentalist & producer Pete Cunningham a.k.a. Ishmael is the brainchild behind the project and the collective have quickly come to the light of influential tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs and just about everyone else.

For his International Tribe selection, Pete Cunningham takes inspiration from his family. On the sleeve of Severn Songs 3, there's a dedication to Sam & Gordon. The latter was Pete Cunningham's Grandfather, who died in 2017 aged 94. 

During the Christmas period, Pete visited his Grandfather's old home and dug into his vast and varied record collection, the outcome, an hour-long journey through sacred Indian ragas, early spiritual jazz and South African funk.

So much fun here with Stephan Lipinski and Paul Racle as we blow through some Alpine Grooving.  Our blues original set's Paul's fine bass line down, with Pinner knowing just what to do.  Paul is one of the most creative and inspiring voices here, producing so much fine music that bends genres and nails them too.  We all owe him a big thanks for vast collection of music he has recorded to inspire others to join and create.  Sweet bass grooving from him here!  
Stephan is a hired gun too, and we've done over 50 tunes together so far, yet have not met:). But we will and that will be an important party!  Can't wait to do the same in Zurich, Paul.  You know that:)))

For starters, today is Rients' 35th Birthday so let's wish him a happy birthday!  It is always a very special treat when the Dutch fusion master Rients Draaisma performs, and here he's joined me again on our original, Something Higher.  Rients http://www.rientsdraaisma.com is as deep as guitarists get - simply brilliant - a world class musician who is humble and inspiring to so many.  Check out the lines he creates here over the churning 12/8 time signature.  With Rients' guitar mastery, there certainly has to be something higher.

18 Years Later

Jazz/Fusion keyboard player, composer and producer.  Marketing, advertising, publishing and sales career.  Originally from Chicago, where I developed a strong appreciation for the blues and classical, and moved to New York, where jazz and the fine arts are so deep.  Key musical influences include Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Zawinul and Weather Report, Chick Corea and Return to Forever, John McLaughlin and the Mahivishnu Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Scott Henderson and Tribal Tech, Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Emily Remler, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Jimmy Smith, Joey DeFrancesco, Larry Young, Buddy Guy, Santana and Earth Wind & Fire.   Former classical clarinet and piano player.  Unless noted, my music on SoundCloud was composed, recorded and performed using only keyboards.  An avid photographer.  Many covers here are my shots.
