This one's for you Santi...
Two months ago our dear and wonderfully talented friend and musician Santi Caballero Mendez was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident in his hometown of Barcelona.  Sam and I had recorded over 50 tunes together yet we had never spoken.  To honor Santi, we have created our tribute Missing You - with 17 different musicians around the world who had recorded with Sam in my music.  The music brings out so many emotions for me, sadness, joy, passion, playfulness, and of course the incredible latin spirit.   Each section of the piece has different musicians, and so many musicians appear and reappear throughout the piece - but often with different supporting casts.  In the end, a moving tribute from so many of Soundcloud's very finest.  Thank you all for joining in as we honor Santi - and thank you Santi...we're Missing You:

Lifetime recording artist, soul vocalist, saxophone and harmonica player Johnny Pugh sits in with blues guitarist extraordinaire Justin Valente and me on an emotional Ray Charles type slow jam.  What a wonderful surprise to hear Johnny's beautiful harp lines, which fit perfectly with Justin's raw electric blues energy. This was something special! This track is a collaboration between Daniel van den Berg aka Danarchx on guitars and Jamie Rhind on Organ, strings synth and bass Synth. We aimed for a kind of Deep Durple meets Al Di Meola meets Yngwie kind of thing. It was cool and courageous of Jamie trying on a loud rock/metal piece but the result is... Well you judge!

Drag Racers on the Spanish Highway - Part 1 - Featuring Jamie Rhind

Gotta love the open invitation from Scotland's finest SC guitarist, fuzzmaster and executive chef Ian Tait https://soundcloud.com/ian-tait to join him on this heavy funk rocker.  Ian's signature funky sound and outstanding Wah playing were just what the doctor ordered for me, so I jumped in with some heavy synth guitar patch to try and match Ian's electricity on my keyboard.  On this track I take the first and third solos.  Damn this was fun Ian!!!  You are back with a vengeance.

What She Said

We are so excited to present this seminal soul blues classic Who Knows, first performed by Jimi Hendrix' '70 power soul trio, Band of Gypsies.   Stick with it through the end for a thrilling ride.   Leading our team is Detroit's rocker Tony "Bluestone" Pappas https://soundcloud.com/tonybluestone , who just nails the spirit of Buddy Miles, Hendrix' drummer and vocalist.  So great to have Tony's soulful and rhythmical approach on this extended recording.  Our two exceptional guitar players are both from The Netherlands - Marco Oversteegen and Rients Draaisma.  Marco https://soundcloud.com/marco-oversteegen just had to be a part of this recording, as for me he is the closest player I know in approach and sound to what Hendrix laid down over 40 years ago.  If it sounds like Jimi here, it is Marco's beautiful playing.  Rients http://www.rientsdraaisma.com https://soundcloud.com/rients-draaisma comes at it from quite a different angle indeed, using a very progressive fusion inspired approach to his  brilliant and unique soloing, and while also taking it back with superb pitch bending and pentatonics.  As a huge Hendrix fan, and one who has been deeply influenced by his playing, I've decided to also solo, using a heavy keyboard synth patch to try and complement these two cats.  A big thanks to Rients for his programming of the drums for us here. Who Knows - with TonyBluestone Pappas / Marco Oversteegen / Rients Draaisma / Jamie Rhind

Grace Ives never pursued music in the traditional sense like many of her peers. Instead, it followed her like a common thread that connected her various dwellings over the past few years. Whether living in Brooklyn with her parents, or in Baltimore while briefly studying at MICA, or the three years following at SUNY Purchase, Grace made music irrespective of setting or ambition. She made pop songs inspired by the sounds of Brittany Spears and Rihanna while surrounded by “punk-er” friends in Maryland, bought and MC 505 to emulate the sound of MIA while surrounded by guitar noodling when the cult of Mitski still loomed large over the SUNY Purchase campus, and opened so many shows to audiences of one, maybe two, that she cannot even think to count. But along the way she won people over, almost literally one-by-one, until audiences began to grow in number. Now, living in Astoria, Queens, Ives regularly leaves home with a blue Ikea bag full of her musical equipment to play shows all over the metro area—to audiences of increasingly insatiable fans. 

As for her writing process, her melodic ideas simply do not leave her alone. She is always singing. A day before being interviewed to get source material for this biography, she lost her Juul e-cigarette, inspiring the song “Juuliana,” a love song, as she has it, where she “looks for Juuliana.” Much of her work stems from these simple and relatable nuggets of experiences. It is almost as if putting her thoughts to a melody are a way of processing the world as she sees it unfold around her. These humble origins of her ridiculously catchy songs are, she says, result of a “keep it simple, stupid” approach, one that she pulls off with the fire-y confidence of artists such as Bratmobile or Minutemen. 

As Grace would have it: “I’m a man of few words, or just the same words over and over again. Everything about me is very laid back, my music is just supposed to be fun, danceable. I write songs so that they get stuck in people’s heads. I follow a formula. Butterfly is two notes, Mansion is six. I’m trying to keep it minimal, just so I can get this idea out and listen to it. I just try to crank these out, not so I can do something else, like sleep, drink, or go to a party, but so I can do more. I’m relatable, I shop on a budget, I’m your friend, and I want to write songs for you… to dance to. And I’m a great cook—I make a killer bolognese.”

Anyone wanna dance?  Joined here with Stringburner and Pinner on our funky original, Stay Low.  The right message for the time, with the worldwide social distancing and isolation priorities.  But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy a solid groove.  This one reminds me of John Scofield's classic Uberjam.
