Sympathies is Furtive’s eclectic series of self-published original albums, showcasing an extensive multi-genre catalog of colorful and exploratory production and deft dancefloor sorcery. The eighth installment adds some delightful new twists and novel directions to Furtive’s expansive body of work while revisiting some familiar ground with new intentions, keener ears, and a pointedly precise approach to dancefloor dynamics - the result of measured and open-minded genre-agnostic exploration and considerably more dancefloor experience dutifully won through Furtive’s residencies at off-the-books Philly DIY venue Bounce House, their radio residency at scene mainstay Great Circles, and a string of stand-out gigs.

Sympathies’ name references a body of work made during a debauched steamy summertime studio session many years ago - once a true sentimental touchstone of identity, and now a long-surpassed, beautifully, blissfully outclassed memory, a pleasant smile in the existential rear-view, a warm breeze in the gale of history. 

Sympathies is a blur of emotions, experiences, sensations, relationships, and the psychedelic fragments between, given meaning through sound waves and motion, through riotous adventures, bright lights, and the unexpected plot twists that shape life.

Jump Phenomena takes its name from the scientific idea of a sudden shift after long, steady buildup. The track mirrors that tension. It pushes forward like it’s about to snap, releases, then rebuilds again, always hovering on the edge of collapse.

This one has a bit of a history. The track is a collaboration with Jimmy Goodman, a recording pro best known for co-founding the East Village recording studio TransporterRaum and recording artists like The Strokes and Blonde Redhead. The initial sketches came out of a live jam at Nick Cislak’s Germantown Ave. studio, where Jimmy Goodman and I recorded audio and MIDI. We later chopped and edited our recordings, designing new sounds from the MIDI to stretch and twist the material into something more dynamic and volatile.

We actually finished the mix and master nearly two years ago (right before my daughter was born) and the track has been waiting in the wings ever since. Now feels like the right time to finally let it out. In a way, its namesake feels timely too: we’re all living through a moment where pressure keeps building, and it’s hard not to feel like something is about to give.

Homebound

Jayms Joyce is an independent electronic musician from Philadelphia. New to the electronic music scene, Jayms Joyce released a four-song EP titled Budump on June 16th, 2023. While new to electronic music production, Jayms Joyce is not new to music. He first gained exposure to music as a classical pianist and grew up competing in classical piano competitions. Jayms Joyce released an indie rock album in 2010 and played in a small band in Philadelphia for almost 3 years before taking a hiatus from recording and performing to focus on developing his career outside of music. Like many other musicians, the pandemic inspired Jayms Joyce to begin pursuing his passion for music again, this time developing his unique electronic sound and honing his live act, in which he performs live synthesizer parts alongside his produced tracks. Jayms Joyce has since performed his live electronic set to electronic music appreciators at events like Dancing on the Charles in Boston and is working on new releases through collaborations with other developing Philadelphia musicians.
