Year 1271. Marco Polo, still a teenager, leaves Venice with his father for a long journey along the Silk Road, a journey lasted years that will take him to China, crossing Asia, unknown places and ancient cities. Trebizond, Baghdad, Samarkand, Beijing up to Xanadu at the court of Kubilai Khan. Years later he will write "Il Milione", the story of that incredible journey.

Alone together or together alone, in its many meanings. It is a piece mainly in major but with moments of melancholy, between hope and sadness. About existential solitude but also about brotherhood, the connection between individuals.

Beneath a marbled sky, the erg sprawls endlessly, its countless dunes molded by eons of relentless winds. They are linear dunes, long and snake-like, some reaching hundreds of kilometers in length. They slither across the landscape alongside one another—sometimes running perfectly parallel, sometimes converging, and sometimes branching off into patterns resembling river estuaries. It is a landscape in motion, appearing like a rolling sea to one who is patient enough to deliberately observe. Sometimes, when the sand flows in the exact right way, it causes a mass-vibration to occur, and a haunting, rich tone hums across the erg.
In the distance, the skies suddenly darken. The already relentless winds begin to roar furiously, bringing forth massive eddies of airborne sand. Above this dusty veil the blackened skies advance. Lightning streaks across the sky, rending it open into a storm the likes of which is seen here perhaps once or twice a century. Thunder crackles. Hailstones the size of fists pummel the dunes. It is an all-encompassing vortex of sand, ice, and blackened atmosphere. A shriek seems to emanate from
the very earth.
Yet, just as quickly as it appeared, the storm recedes, and the roaring winds that brought it forth usher its exit. The clumps
of hail dissolve into the unquenchable sands, and the dune waves resume their slow, deliberate journey across the erg,
humming as they go.

Erg contains a form of graphic music notation where shapes I have traced from actual satellite images of dunes are featured directly in the sheet music. These "dune lines" direct the performers to bend their pitches according to the contours they are shown. This allows the orchestra to very literally "read" the topography of the desert.

Beyond the Noble Way is a new additional to the brass repertoire. It is a story of married romance which begins with a call for two to become one. It weaves between two lovers and ends with Father God's assurance that, through it all, He is with them beyond the noble way. It is dedicated to the late Patricia Zadrozny, the wife of a dear friend of mine who is an incredible trombonist. The horn represents Pat and the trombone is her husband, Ed. The title came from her married name. Patricia means "noble." Zadrozny is a Polish name that means "beyond the way." This is a computerized version.

Beyond the Noble Way for Brass Quintet

"EMERGENCE was commissioned by Rebecca Vendemo, founder/conductor of the Spring Hill Orchestra, and premiered on October 26, 2019. It was on my heart to write with Tennessee in mind and to write about women rising up. The theme is about emerging purpose in a season where women, who have been traditionally undervalued, are being rightly recognized and brought forth. The motifs were gleaned from my childhood favorite hymn tune, "Purpose," by Martin F. Shaw. Shaw himself was an advocate for women. Just like our purpose emerges, fragments of the hymn emerge in this work and are nurtured and developed. They grow into the full-blown melody of the hymn, "Purpose," in all its triumph."     ~ Judith Markovich

EMERGENCE: Tone Poem on the Hymn Tune "Purpose"

This is the second edition, full version of The Looking Glass, a contemporary dance suite by Judith P. Markovich, is a unique five-movement piece for 13 players: woodwind quintet, trumpet, bass, and percussion. The TITLE was inspired by the poet Dale Wimbrow who challenges us to listen to the guy in the mirror.

The Looking Glass

LAMENT is for piano quintet and empty chair, dedicated to my dear friend, Laura Flax. Laura, the first female clarinetist of the New York City Ballet Orchestra and member of the Da Capo Chamber Players, was a fierce inspiration. I planned to meet up with her in NYC on a recent trip, but when I found out that she had passed, I was too numb to speak.

Like metal to a magnet, I was drawn into my studio and stared at my music notation software, unable to move. One lone, long note pushed through waves of grief. It came again, and again. I finally wrote it down but struggled. My familiar harmonic colors felt so shallow in light of my intense grief. I needed something deep. Suddenly I remembered the last time I heard Laura play. It was a Messiaen piece, which he wrote in a concentration camp. It then knew its octatonic mode brought the depth of color to my sound palette that I needed. 

Lament travels through undulations of numbness, anger, denial, and ends with a final surrender to acceptance. Though the empty chair represents my own friend's absence, performers are free to use the empty chair to represent any loss of their own.

LAMENT for Piano Quintet and Empty Chair

Three Miniatures for Viola is an unaccompanied solo chock full of spirited fun and challenge. A soft touch of romance is sandwiched between two rhythmic, multi-metered movements.  For violists longing for a short, showy contemporary piece to balance a future program, this may very well compliment your selections.

THREE MINIATURES for Solo Viola

This is a frolicking, fun piece dedicated to Roger Wiesmeyer, English hornist of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. When I talked about writing a duo for him, he requested cello. We talked about a rhapsody but what came out of me was this happy set of dances, something, we both agree, the world could use about now.

The Dabbling Duck: Dance Suite for English Horn and Cello

Short, contemporary pieces for string quartet and bassoon. Each composition is based on (and named after) a scale taken from Nicolas Slonimsky's Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns.  This work has become a sourcebook for composers and has influenced many famous musicians such as John Coltrane and Frank Zappa.

A core idea of the Thesaurus is that new scales can be created by dividing the octave into several equal parts. The scales are arranged according to the principle interval, and the intervals are identified by Latin and Greek names. For example, Diatessaron indicates a perfect 4th while Quadtritone indicates a minor 6th. 

These peices can be performed singely, or grouped together in any desired comination as movements in a larger work.
