Disquiet Junto Project 0161: Netmix Relabel

Every year, the "Disquiet Junto"  poses the same project, ever since the very first Junto project, back in January 2012: "Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it"

Here, I've recorded 3 icecubes tumbling down in a drinking glass - and then spent a couple of hours mangling, stretching, reverbing, reversing, delaying, eq'ing, deleting, restarting, re-recording, giving-up'ing, and then still posting...

...it's a great, but difficult, challenge to make something. This is, as is probably the easiest, an "ethereal" version of my experiments.

Process notes: recorded some ice cubes rattling in a glass and used only stretched snippets from that sounds to make this slow walking piece.
Pretty mellow and chill I think, unlike the very first junto project, where I made much more noise.

Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it.

Just ice - disquiet0523

Ice cube in a wine glass sampled for Disquiet Junto 0523. Played around with the sample on the Circuit Rhythm, then into Ableton for layering those recordings and arranging. Duplicated a couple of the tracks and added some spectral resonance, very low in mix. Played some drums because the cube samples had some sweet rhythms and I couldn't get Beastie Boys "Ill Communication" out of my head.

Spent Apparatus  - disquiet0161-netmixrelabel

**Production Notes**

Netlabel Remixes for the Disquiet Junto are always nice - in my hands, they tend to become beats ranging from 90 to 120 bpm. This one's 104 bpm.

All the sounds were made from the material provided. The samples were used for all the drums, drumloops and gnarly melody loops. 

Well, I cheated a bit and rendered one MIDI melody / bassline from the original sample material. Ableton Live does that magic trick. Took an 303 wannabe emulation I built several weeks ago in Live. The rest was twisting knobs and trying to get the levels right.

4 hours of work. My ears bleed. Tired now. Good nite.

Last Kiss, Lingering

after downloading and listening to the three tracks (which are all excellent in their own right) I cut  out the bits required and looped parts pitchshifted parts and drank beer.
then i relooped and resampled parts, a bit of panning here and there and more beer eventually I ended up with this, which is exactly what I really wanted in the first place.

happiness is wanting what you have, eh?

i selected little one, two, three seconds slivers from each of the tracks before making a wonky little semi-articulated beat out of them. I then dragged this pattern through a number of packages and filters and effects 'til it sounded suitably curious and immersive and hadn't quite renounced all sense of rhythm.[fwiw, it's designed to loop.]

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
