Sounding the Seventh Trumpet

More music live from Dan's Basement, Music Weekend 2017, with Tilbury, Greenwood & Burns. Yes, we're still working through the pieces, even though I'm supposed to be working on another @LoranOtzer track now. 

This came around on Sunday around noon when Hank pulled out a variety of kalimbas. Of a small one made I believe of a sardine tin, he said 'Well, the only thing I can do with this one is this sort of generic Latin riff.' We said 'Oh? Keep it going' and before long my boy (then age 12) heard me trying, and failing, to play a bossa beat on the kit and came down to show us how to do it. I jumped to uke and Jeff laid down some heavy bass. Hank had heard the Headhunters version of Watermelon Man on the way into the Greater Wayne PA Region, so we added some empty bottles and hoots to the background along with some extra percussion and melodica. Whole thing took about 45 minutes, and it only took us a year to edit it. 
End result is vintage 'world' music: aLatinate calypso riff, anchored by a lamellophone of African origin, a Hawaiian stringed instrument, a Brazilian drum beat, and a free reed developed by a German company but played here on the offbeat in pale imitation of its greatest proponent, Augustus Pablo.  Blend it up in the basement.

Dan did most of the mixing in Audacity, which explains a few things. Now you know why Jeff usually does the mixing!

MY LOVE OF SCI-FI KNOWS NO BOUNDS...THIS DUB IS A TIP OF THE HAT TO A SHOW I USED TO WATCH AS A KID, THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN.  A LOT OF OF REGGAE DUB ARTISTS HAVE A FASCINATION WITH SCI-FI AND THE OBSCURE AND HAVE CONCENTRATED THEIR EFFORTS ON SUCH THEMES (I.E. MAD PROFESSOR, Scientist, LEE PERRY'S "FUNG FU MEETS THE DRAGON" ALBUM, ETC..."  THIS IS A HEAVY DUB, SOME INSPIRATION FROM DUB SYNDICATE (ANYTHING THEY HAVE EVER PUT OUT), AS THEY ARE EXTREME DUB AS IT SHOULD BE DONE IN MY MIND...YOU MAY WANT TO HIT REPEAT ON THIS ONE TO GET ALL THE LITTLE DETAILS....ENJOY, THANKS FOR LISTENING...THIS IS HEAVY SHIT,,,MUCH LOVE , ROOTS!!!

He was already ill, when we started this collab.
I've loved his feeling for Reggae. So I asked him to send me some stems. 
He sent me the drums and a bass-track and I sent him mine in return. But he didn't have enough time to finish our collab. I had to do that without him...
It was strange working with someone who doesn't answer anymore... - and very sad...! 
I tried to liven it up a little bit. I guess, he would have liked that more this way.

Big thanks to Jamie Rhind who broke the silence and encouraged me to go on. And thanks, too, for the nice steel drums.

"Jörg S. born in Cologne, from youth on, is fascinated by all kinds of art, so he taught himself the saxophone very early. Nowadays flutes of all kind are also part of the equipment, as are jaw harps, percussion, bass, guitars and keyboards.
He was and is always involved in many band projects and session events.
In the 80s he was a saxophonist in the Adam Noidlt Intermission Orchestra with gigs in Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Basel. Very early on he also worked as a writer with live readings in the Cologne area and was a painter with large formats for many years, all in addition to his job as a graphic designer. Now, retired, he is devoted solely to music: home recording with the platform of choice, Soundcloud and global collaborations."
