In music, the term “arabesque” refers to a highly ornamental melody whose free unfolding expresses a slowing of time within the composition. Unlike the straight line, which is the most direct path from A to B, the curving movement of the arabesque creates an effect of circular phrases that conjure perpetual melodies. Debussy referred to "arabesque" as a piece of music with exquisite detail and clear repetitions of ideas and artistic balance. This term is used for various kinds of melodic, contrapuntal, or harmonic ornamentation. Several composers including Claude Debussy and Robert Schumann have used this term as a title for compositions.
