At the intersection of techno's industrial past and its avant-garde future stands Phase Fatale, the Berlin-based project of Hayden Payne. A resident at both Berghain and KHIDI, Payne channels his roots in New York's post-punk and EBM scenes into a sound that's precisely engineered for the deepest corners of the dancefloor. 

Since emerging in 2014, Phase Fatale has been pivotal in reshaping the contours of modern techno. His releases on labels like Ostgut Ton, Jealous God, and Hospital Productions showcase a commitment to sonic exploration, blending dense atmospheres with rhythmic precision. His 2020 album, Scanning Backwards, was specifically engineered for Berghain's acoustics, reflecting his deep connection to the club's sonic environment.

Beyond his productions, Payne co-founded the BITE label in 2018, aiming to platform artists operating outside conventional techno paradigms. With a roster that includes both emerging talents and established names, BITE has become a beacon for those seeking the fringes of electronic music

“I Wish I Knew How It Started” is a journey through Berlin’s nightlife - the highs, the chaos, the small moments that stay with you. Each track shows fragments of club culture: brief connections, shifting identities, and the pull between euphoria and emptiness. Based on my own experiences, the album blends emotion with hypnotic grooves. Released on Diffuse Reality Records.

I’m really happy to finally publish my first full album with 8 tracks and to do it with Diffuse Reality Records. Being able to share my productions with other people in the scene means the world to me. It’s a big step, and it just feels right😇

After the intro track “Before the Sun Rises”, the album moves into the transformation that happens in the darkness. “How the Night Changed Us” is about how Berlin can strip away who you thought you were. “Behind Closed Doors” and “Nameless Bodies” take you into the hidden, hedonistic spaces of the night, and everyone becomes a nameless part of the crowd.

But there’s also another side to it. In “The Weight of Silence”, you feel how fast these moments can disappear. “These Chains That Bind Us” is about the tension between wanting to stay in the club and the pull of reality waiting outside.

Finally, “Fragmented Identity” looks at the feeling of coming out of it all a bit different, a bit unsure of which parts of you are real.

This album is my way of putting some of those feelings into sound. I hope you enjoy listening to it🥹❤️

Hey, I'm Juan, a musician who’s equally obsessed with classical music and electronic beats. There’s just something about how techno plays with rhythm and harmony that pulls me in like nothing else.

I feel most alive when I’m outside my usual concert venues, especially when I play in Berlin’s underground techno clubs—those spaces really trigger my creativity.
