this weeks Disquiet is to make 200bpm ambient - who could resist a challenge like that 

Not really sure if it is either gabber or ambient but it is at 220 bpm! 

I'm sure in the right state of mind this could take you places!

Made for the disquiet junto 0556 where the idea was to fuse ambient and gabber genres.

Drums were made on a Digitakt and the rest was adding chaos / bliss in Ableton. Vocal samples come from Inspector Morse going to a rave. Legend has it this long episode contains the line "It's a rave, Lewis!", well I searched and couldn't find that, so just took some other bits.

Gabber Ambient (disquiet0556)

Initially, I thought Gabber wouldn't be my cup of tea, but archive.org had some really interesting modern Gabber tracks under a Creative Commons License. The song that appealed to me the most was from an Indonesian production (Gabber Modus Operandi - Puxxximaxxx, "Hey Nafsu", https://archive.org/details/yesno091).

Ninety-nine percent of the sounds came from the track. I chopped up the snippets with Voltage Modular, stretched them in Ableton, and maltreated them with long effects chains. To add a bit of Ambient cliche, I added the song of a humpback whale (because, why not – sometimes a track needs a pink fluffy unicorn ribbon).

It still sounds rough around the edges, but maybe there's a genre of noise ambient it fits into.

The Assignment: Field-test a hybrid genre.

Gabber and ambient music seem like polar opposites. Gabber is typified by a constant distorted kick drum pummelling you at upwards of 200bpm. Ambient, on the other hand, can be deeply immersive or barely noticeable. This project asks the question: is “gabber ambient” possible?

Step 1: Consider what makes gabber gabber and what makes ambient ambient. Where is there crossover?

Step 2: Make a track that could be construed as “gabba ambient.”

Step 3: You’re probably going to want to delete it. Try not to. Save and upload.

Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0556” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0556” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation of a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your tracks. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your tracks.

Step 4: Post your track in the following discussion thread at llllllll.co:

0822 Disquiet Junto 556 Snafu Snafu Hey

This track is intended to create the soundscape of a superficially quiet place, where the hectic noises of industrial manufacturing processes blend with the calm melodies of strings and piano.
The string part was played by a Sonic Pi algorithm programmed exclusivly for this track - it reacts on Midi-notes and creates highly randomized sections based on these inputs.

The music was inspired by the Disquiet Junto Project 0556 (see below), the proposed Gabber-music inspired its interpretation as machine-induced production-sounds.
