August 2016 Discoveries.

This playlist is a compilation of the favourite musical discoveries of the Wud Records team from everything they heard at SoundCloud during August 2016.

Tracks have been arranged according to the number of plays at the time of publishing, starting with the fewest. Tracks that are early in playlists tend to receive more plays than later tracks, and we feel that the ones with fewer plays need the best chance of exposure.

August 2016 Discoveries

Guitar

It has been a pure pleasure to play and record with the super talented Justin Valente @justin-valente. Justin lives and breathes guitar and has such a deep and wonderful understanding of blues, blues history, and its evolution and influence in rock. And Justin uses that to turn out some of the consistently baddest guitar playing on SoundCloud. Capital B. Almost every day. So impressive.

When I found him here on SC I was instantly attracted to both his sound and conception. Somewhere that I would love to be if I played the electric guitar. A ton of electricity in his playing, raw energy, and a great understanding of navigating through the changes. If you haven't already, click to go to Justin's SC gallery and follow him. He is a serious student, and makes everything we do sound better.

Here's a collection of about 10 tunes we have recorded together....some classic tunes as well as originals. Very proud of these recordings.

This is an acoustic track that i made last year - just a rhythm guitar and a lead/melody.  I know that I should do more like this - but honestly the ideas just dont come that easy :)

What fun pulling this together with three serious musicians.  You probably know Joe Bongiovanni and Justin Valente's awesome blues oriented guitars, and they stretch out here on this funk / soul / fusion groove.  Burning it up they are.  And joining us on Alto Sax is recording artist Matt Criscuolo.  Look for him at mattcriscuolo.com.  These guys just play their ass off here.  Started with an internet fusion loop, I added many keyboard lines to funk it up to the max, and we added these pros.  Joe takes the opening solos for the first four minutes, Justin follows, and we finish with all the guys trading off.  So much energy.  Positive energy here.  Put this on and relax. Funk And Burn - With Joe Bongiovanni and Justin Valente guitars and Matt Criscuolo alto sax

Bringing a soulful sound to SoundCloud with this one.  Lifetime recording artist, soul vocalist, saxophone and harmonica player Johnny Pugh sits in with blues guitarist extraordinaire Justin Valente and me on an emotional Ray Charles type slow jam.  What a wonderful surprise to hear Johnny's beautiful harp lines, which fit perfectly with Justin's raw electric blues energy. Mule's Blues (collab featuring Jamie Rhind)

So much fun to have musicians all over the world play together, and this jam includes three of my very favorite guitarists and musicians here on SoundCloud...Tom Adams, Ian Tait and Justin Valente.  These guys can all light up a stage, and graciously came together for this funky collaboration.  If you aren't following them all you should be - you'll be getting fresh tracks almost every day from each.  Tom and Justin are both from the US (Austin and NYC), and Ian hails from Edinburgh, Scotland.   For our Summer Funk Jam here, we started with a very funky internet backing track, allowing everyone to dig in and do their thing.  You'll recognize each of the guys' styles if you've been listening to their galleries, and together it makes for some serious Summer Funk. A swinging shuffle with the outstanding Justin Valente on electric guitar.  Justin developed this 12 bar blues after listening to one of his favorite bands, Gov't Mule.  If you are into serious blues and electric guitar, you gotta check out more of New Jersey's own Justin Valente.  He's all over SoundCloud and loves to create and share new music almost every day. Created this Latin Jazz Rock tune with a very percussive latin groove over classic jazz changes.  Justin as always does a fantastic job with the guitar, helping anchor the mood while developing a fine solo to complement the salsa groove.  Put on your dancing shoes...

Latin Dancer - with Justin Valente / guitar

This track is a cover of Freddie King's Palace of the King.  It was great fun to put all of this together and was a big challenge because we have an international cast (US, Netherlands and Spain), so many tracks to mix, and this is a really ambitious song.  I am happy with the outcome and really grateful for the wonderful teamwork on this.  Thanks to Johnny, Jamie and Debbie - a better group of people to work with you will not find :)

Palace Of The King (Freddie King cover featuring Johnny Pugh, Jamie Rhind and Debbie Deijkers)

This is a one night production featuring Jamie on organ / keyboards and me on guitar.  I put the background together using drum loops from beta monkey and bass loops from the loop loft.  I like the groove on this and it was a pleasure to collaborate with Jamie as always.  We knocked this track out in a matter of hours - which is pretty cool :)

G - Funk (featuring Jamie Rhind)

This is another track that came together pretty quickly.  The groove was inspired by some jamming I heard a few days ago and played along with for a while.  Once you have an idea what you're going for, these tracks can come together easily and take on a life of their own.

This one is me on guitars and bass and Jamie on organ and synth.  Drums are loops from beta monkey's funk drums collection.  

I am not good at naming these tracks and am functioning on little sleep, but after the fact I realized that my playing on this track is sort of inspired by the Grateful Dead's 'Help on the Way/Slipknot', which is a really cool tune and I unconsciously borrowed some of that vibe.  Jamie sounds great as usual and is pushing it hard on this one.  Hope you enjoy :)

Thought I'd throw up a funky track with many syncopated layers.  I started with an internet guitar backing track and as the tune progressed, a John Scofield Uberjam  / a GoGo vibe came out - without John's unreal guitar playing over the top.  Check out John's two Uberjam and a GoGo albums if you are digging this track.  Check em out even if you're not too! Funk You Up  - a Tribute to John Scofield

It's Friday so why not throw up some funk!  There is no one deeper than Herbie Hancock, so I created this funky tune as a tribute to Herbie.  Such an important influence he was across so many genres.  Herbie is the consummate musician.  A fellow native of Chicago, Herbie soloed with the Chicago Symphony at around age 12, started producing his own albums on Blue Note before he was 20, joined the legendary Miles Davis quintet in '64, and brought electronic keyboards with the Rhodes to Miles with the famous Miles Smiles album, then pioneering electronic keyboards in the late 60s with In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew.  Miles had an album Get on Up With It, which is where I took the name from - a common phrase back in the late 60s and 70s..that James Brown of course used with his funky Sex Machine hit.  In addition to his incredible influence with Miles, Herbie left him around '72 to form the Headhunters, which then created what still is the best selling "jazz" album of all time - with Chameleon and so many other classics.  Herbie has meant so much to me that we named our first Beagle Herbie Hancock.  And was Herbie amused when I met him at a party and told him that.  Anyway, here's Get on Up.  I've used a real nice backing track with Swiss guitarist Hanspeter Kruesi https://soundcloud.com/music-pictures to set the groove and then added a number of keyboard and Miles like muted trumpet lines to bring it to life.  Get on Up!

Get On Up - Tribute to Herbie Hancock

Inspirational and a mentor he has been to so many around the world.  So many countries.  Yesterday Tom surprised us all with a Soundcloud farewell jam and so we thought it would be best to get right back to him to let him know we digged his efforts for us all here.  On Payday,  Justin just takes this one home for Tom, as only Justin can.  He's picking up the organ and drum groove and spinning it around silly.  Heavy blues rock sound from New Jersey!! Dan van den Berg steals the show here on a Miles type modal groove, while breaking a high E string in the process.  See if you can find where:)  A special tune for us to toast Miles like this.  From the late 60s on Miles always had one or two super serious fusion guitar players on stage with him - John McLaughlin, Pete Cosey, Mike Stern, Barry Finnerty, John Scofield, Robin Ford and Foley. Taking It Up - Dan van den Berg / Jamie Rhind

Created this tune to shed some reflection on the most difficult ongoing and escalating situations that exist in the Middle East.  The extraordinary Canadian Clarinetist Michel Martineau graciously accepted the challenge to join the music and has created a wonderful line that weaves in and out to complement the pulsating rhythms and modal melodies. Sunrise Over Baghdad -  with Michel Martineau / clarinet

Always exciting for me to have an opportunity to perform and record with Norway's brilliant fusion guitarist, composer and recording engineer Ronny Heimdal https://soundcloud.com/ronny-heimdal .  I started working on this tune late this summer when one of other favorite guitarists Justin Valente https://soundcloud.com/justin-valente sent me a funk track to collaborate on.  6 weeks went by and I was waiting for Justin to add his solos to it.  But I forgot the original track had come from Justin and then asked Ronny to do his thing with the opening and solos, and posted, without giving credit to Justin for setting the groove - or even the original idea.  SO SORRY JUSTIN!  Memory lapse!

With the new tune, Ronnie kicks it into high gear immediately on this funk fusion jam, and just doesn't let up.  Not only is he bringing his A game to make this come alive, but he's also brought his knowledge and ear to create the right sound and balance.  If you are fan of superb guitar, of jazz rock fusion, and of modal pieces, this one's for you   -  Go Ahead Ronny...named after a classic tune Miles Davis did on Big Fun, with John McLaughlin stretching it out over a modal groove....  Perhaps I should rename it So Sorry Justin:)

Go Ahead Ronny - with Ronny Heimdal

A few months ago, Jamie and I collaborated on this track, which I thought came out pretty well.  Today Mirko (@Stringburner) said he liked the tune and would like to contribute to it.  So he sent me a bass track, I remixed with his playing added, and then remastered the track.  I really like the result and the bass is a great addition.  It's always nice to revisit these tracks after a while and try to improve them.

This is a cover of one of my favorite instrumentals, Sco-Mule by Gov't Mule.  It was done as a tribute to John Scofield and they are now playing it together on their current tour.  

We have me on guitars, Jamie on keys, Ned on slide, and Mirko holding down the bass.  Thanks as always to these guys who make this so fun.  This was a really tough tune to arrange and put a backing track together for, and once it was done, the guys gave me easy material to work with.

I Guess This Is An Island?

Another jazz classic here with Black Orpheus / Manha De Carnaval, written by Luiz Bonfa.  The bossa nova was written for a 1959 movie set in Rio for their famous Carnaval festival.  I've recorded this one over a straight eights beat instead of a traditional bossa groove.  Sure you will enjoy this wonderful melody, and hope you have an opportunity to visit this magical city and people some day.

Independence Day Blues

I've been playing guitar with varying degrees of devotion for about 30 years. I love to play and record every chance I get and have really enjoyed my time on SC so far.  My musical influences are guitar greats such as Hendrix, SRV, Jerry Garcia, Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, Robben Ford, Mike Bloomfield, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks. I love listening to other people's music and drawing inspiration from their talents.  Most of all I appreciate all of the support from the community here and look forward to spending a lot more time. :)
