It has been a pure pleasure to play and record with the super talented Justin Valente @justin-valente. Justin lives and breathes guitar and has such a deep and wonderful understanding of blues, blues history, and its evolution and influence in rock. And Justin uses that to turn out some of the consistently baddest guitar playing on SoundCloud. Capital B. Almost every day. So impressive.

When I found him here on SC I was instantly attracted to both his sound and conception. Somewhere that I would love to be if I played the electric guitar. A ton of electricity in his playing, raw energy, and a great understanding of navigating through the changes. If you haven't already, click to go to Justin's SC gallery and follow him. He is a serious student, and makes everything we do sound better.

Here's a collection of about 10 tunes we have recorded together....some classic tunes as well as originals. Very proud of these recordings.

This is a collaboration with the great Willie Johnson Jr. (@willie-johnson-jr) on vocals.  I am so lucky to have worked with so many talented folks!  Anyway, this tune is Magic Sam's "Every Night and Every Day" from his legendary album "West Side Soul".  

Thanks to Willie for doing such a great job on this tune - I am a huge fan!

This is another collab with the great Willie Johnson Jr (@willie-johnson-jr).  If you are not following him, you are missing out!

"I Believe to My Soul" is a Ray Charles classic that has been covered by many great artists over the years.  This is a rocked out version of it, inspired by my current favorite band, Gov't Mule (@govt_mule) - who just kill on this tune. 

Thanks again to Willie for working with me on this - I totally enjoy every second putting these tracks together - even the painful mixing process which just drives me crazy!

On this collab, Willie and I brought in Gernot Baur to play some blues harp as well, and he was awesome to work with and did a great job!

When A Blind Woman Cries

We had a blast pulling this together.  Its a simple blues/gospel riff on organ in F, that sets up some wonderful opportunities for heavy jams over the top by Justin and Tom, two of the finest blues players I have ever recorded with.  Tom has the solos with a more treble sound, and Justin boosts his midrange and bass.  Check out their SoundCloud pages if you are not familiar.  They are bad ass, just like this tune. Bad Ass Blues - with Justin Valente and Tom Adams / guitars

What fun pulling this together with three serious musicians.  You probably know Joe Bongiovanni and Justin Valente's awesome blues oriented guitars, and they stretch out here on this funk / soul / fusion groove.  Burning it up they are.  And joining us on Alto Sax is recording artist Matt Criscuolo.  Look for him at mattcriscuolo.com.  These guys just play their ass off here.  Started with an internet fusion loop, I added many keyboard lines to funk it up to the max, and we added these pros.  Joe takes the opening solos for the first four minutes, Justin follows, and we finish with all the guys trading off.  So much energy.  Positive energy here.  Put this on and relax. Funk And Burn - With Joe Bongiovanni and Justin Valente guitars and Matt Criscuolo alto sax

Created this tune to combine elements of rock and fusion, and was looking to set up soloing similar to what John McLaughlin and Jeff Beck did with Jan Hammer.   Norway's superb fusion guitarist, composer and recording artist Ronny Heimdal is featured, and just tears it up.  Into pieces.  Little pieces.  Check out his gallery here on SoundCloud:

Busting Out - with Ronny Heimdal / guitar

How special for me to have been a part of this collaboration with the young and extraordinary Dutch composer/guitarist/keyboard player Rients Draaisma.  While my hope was to create a forum for a call and response type solo between my synth and Rients' soaring creative guitar ala John McLaughlin and Jan Hammer in the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Rients immediately turned it up several levels to create what we have here.   The head came from a synth solo line of mine that was then adjusted by Rients to meet the intricate and changing meter.  Everything else Rients did - the composition, the most intricate drum tracks, and his very deep soloing.  All  Overnight.  Wow.

Bringing a soulful sound to SoundCloud with this one.  Lifetime recording artist, soul vocalist, saxophone and harmonica player Johnny Pugh sits in with blues guitarist extraordinaire Justin Valente and me on an emotional Ray Charles type slow jam.  What a wonderful surprise to hear Johnny's beautiful harp lines, which fit perfectly with Justin's raw electric blues energy. This track is a cover of Freddie King's Palace of the King.  It was great fun to put all of this together and was a big challenge because we have an international cast (US, Netherlands and Spain), so many tracks to mix, and this is a really ambitious song.  I am happy with the outcome and really grateful for the wonderful teamwork on this.  Thanks to Johnny, Jamie and Debbie - a better group of people to work with you will not find :)

From the late 60s on Miles always had one or two super serious fusion guitar players on stage with him - John McLaughlin, Pete Cosey, Mike Stern, Barry Finnerty, John Scofield, Robin Ford and Foley. Taking It Up - Dan van den Berg / Jamie Rhind

Created this tune to shed some reflection on the most difficult ongoing and escalating situations that exist in the Middle East.  The extraordinary Canadian Clarinetist Michel Martineau graciously accepted the challenge to join the music and has created a wonderful line that weaves in and out to complement the pulsating rhythms and modal melodies. Sunrise Over Baghdad -  with Michel Martineau / clarinet

Always exciting for me to have an opportunity to perform and record with Norway's brilliant fusion guitarist, composer and recording engineer Ronny Heimdal https://soundcloud.com/ronny-heimdal .  I started working on this tune late this summer when one of other favorite guitarists Justin Valente https://soundcloud.com/justin-valente sent me a funk track to collaborate on.  6 weeks went by and I was waiting for Justin to add his solos to it.  But I forgot the original track had come from Justin and then asked Ronny to do his thing with the opening and solos, and posted, without giving credit to Justin for setting the groove - or even the original idea.  SO SORRY JUSTIN!  Memory lapse!

With the new tune, Ronnie kicks it into high gear immediately on this funk fusion jam, and just doesn't let up.  Not only is he bringing his A game to make this come alive, but he's also brought his knowledge and ear to create the right sound and balance.  If you are fan of superb guitar, of jazz rock fusion, and of modal pieces, this one's for you   -  Go Ahead Ronny...named after a classic tune Miles Davis did on Big Fun, with John McLaughlin stretching it out over a modal groove....  Perhaps I should rename it So Sorry Justin:)

I simply asked if their outrage toward young people dying extended to all those who find themselves at the wrong end of a missile or war bullet. This track is not glorifying the act of dying young, but a response to it.

This was originally a collaboration with Willie Johnson Jr. - he picked this great old Freddie King song for us to cover a few months back.  I just remixed/mastered it and asked Jamie to add some piano to round out the tune.  Thanks to both Willie and Jamie for this!

This track is based on the cover that Eric Clapton did on his 'From the Cradle album.'

Andrea Balency - YNBA (too late mix)

I came up with this slow bluesy riff based rhythm trying to get some variation with just two chords to practice licks over and sent it to my friend Al. He loved jamming to it so much he recorded this and immediately sent it back while I was still trying to record a version with a drumtrack - this was really a problem as the actual riff fingering and slides are at the limit of my ability! (Yup, and just 2 chords - see below!) 

So here it is in freetime, just our guitars, with Al's amazing raging lead over my ZZ-ish backing. Raw blues - not for everyone but I love what Al did with this.

The two chords are E and A. The riff is based on E5 played with an open E string at the nut and 12th fret, with a slide back from the G to F# (3rd to second fret or 15/!4th) while keeping the B on the 5th string in place - something I find difficult still. Lots of sliding around too, with some E5 bar chugging at the 7th fret, both to give it variation. Works for me(!) and Al apparently!
 
If anyone would like the backing I will happily provide it - in fact I will try and create a drum based version for open collab when I get some time... 

Please check out Al's tracks - he has a unique technique with some amazing rhythm and lick playing that I have no idea how he does.

I've been playing guitar with varying degrees of devotion for about 30 years. I love to play and record every chance I get and have really enjoyed my time on SC so far.  My musical influences are guitar greats such as Hendrix, SRV, Jerry Garcia, Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, Robben Ford, Mike Bloomfield, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks. I love listening to other people's music and drawing inspiration from their talents.
