Hailing from Gent, Belgium, kaleidoscopic disco band Rheinzand is a collaborative project between multi-instrumentalist and producer Reinhard Vanbergen, Charlotte Caluwaerts and Mo Disko of renowned duo The Glimmers; accompanied live by Stéphane Misseghers (dEUS) on drums and Bruno Coussée (MannGold) on bass. Their second album 'Atlantis Atlantis' is out on the Danish label Music For Dreams.

Upon turning on 'Atlantis Atlantis', the oh so welcome spectre of recently departed Maria Mendola - the airy chanteuse of the beloved Bacchara - seems to appear. Charlotte Caluwaerts, a voice of similar purity proffers the message: “We’ll be alright” on their first single, offering a salve to the troubles the world has faced in recent years. As with their previous work, melody is key. Rich arrangements abound, with Reinhard Vanbergen’s light and funky crevices detailing a home that feels cozy, inviting the listener into the best, most unexpected club around; the one in their living room with all their closest friends. The “Max Berlin” of the group, Mo Disko, is no stranger to bringing this kind of intimacy to his events and freewheeling DJ sets for decades in Gent, Belgium. Once again his spirit pushes the record into that inviting place where inhibition dissolves, (aka you can really freak out).  Much of Rheinhard Vanbergen’s recent output for Music for Dreams has expertly traversed the forgotten worlds of virtuoso led experimental records; full lengths with tracks that maestros like DJ Harvey undoubtedly treasure. There are glimpses of these danceable instrumental improvisational landscapes such as ”Orange Bun”. One thing about Rheinzand is that they are musicians driven to make dance music that harkens back to a moment when real players appeared on dance music records. These were musicians devoted to their instruments, the kind who made love to them on stage, unafraid of modulations, bombast, histrionics even (cue Elefantasi). Slower subdued numbers reiterate the “journey to Atlantis” we are on, such as the a cover of “Love Games” an honest low slung boogie take on the track.  One of the biggest takeaways from 'Atlantis Atlantis' is the excavation of the real fun that was had in dance music before the advent of loop based technology. Epic chord progressions, singing songs in multiple languages - these are musicians exploring the colour palette of the entire Pantone spectrum, not only shades of grey and black. Rheinzand's 2020 s/t debut album was awarded Piccadilly Records' (Manchester) number 1 album of the year and Phonica (London) gave them a well-deserved place in their top 50 of best albums of 2020. Tracks from the album such as ‘Blind’ were championed by DJ Harvey during his summer residency at Pikes Ibiza, and the band have had tracks on the first two volumes of his Mercury Rising compilations.

The music of Mike Salta aka Gert Nygaard flaunts an eclectic palette, collecting strands from New Orleans funk, 80’s italo disco or Brazilian tropicalia and transforming them into rich and sun-drenched dance music.

His newest single Yaeyama, produced in collaboration with long-time studio partner Mortale, is a sumptuous piece of chillout to call on the summer. A full-bodied groove is adorned with silky organs while a re-purposed 90’s rave-sample gives way to Nygaard’s breezy hand-pan lead. The sound is buzzing, warm and balmy throughout. A joyously squirming trumpet solo to round off the pleasantries as well.

The track comes as part of a run of singles leading up to Mike Salta’s debut album for Music For Dreams.

We continue our series of obscure dope folk music with a mix by Lüle from Belgrad, Serbia. He's part of the music project Kompleks and also running parties at Belgrad's most famous club "Klub 20/44" called  Opskura.

Full bio: 

Lüle aka Bojan Gajić is present on club scene since 1999. As a DJ, producer, live act, one-man show, the duo, radio host... Currently he is working under alias Kompleks, project created back in 2007, alongside Nebojša Bogdanović (Schwabe). They are known for their edits, as well as live performances. So far, they’ve released 6 vinyls and a large number of digital releases. They are very proud on their collaboration with Theo Parrish, later released on Far Out Recordings as limited edition *12” vinyl. *Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra – Keep Believing (Can You Feel It) With Kompleks (or solo under alias Lüle), he performed in Belgrade and all major cities in Serbia. Foreign booking came from Russia, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina... He is one of the first residents in the infamous underground club Boat 20/44.

James Rod - 2021 (A New Hope) - Live Mix for Gouranga

During these Covid times I decided to collaborate with creatives around the world. The idea being to combine their art with mine, to see where music could take them as visual artists and hopefully shed light on an industry suffering in the pandemic shadow.   I invited Julia Rado; dancer, phenomenal woman and creator of the fabulous boogie plants, to create a piece for an hour while listening to a dj set I curated to be in tune with her musical world. 

This is Art Of Sound.

It’s been a tough year for us all, but all we can do is stay positive and continue to create. Never give up.
