Der Titel "sirene" ist wegen der Form des Stückes ausgesucht. Ein langsamer Aufbau von immer mehr Klang, der schließlich, gefühlt etwas schneller, genau so verschwindet, wie er gekommen ist. 
Oder kommt der Titel doch wegen des eigentümlichen, sphärischen Klang des Shōs, der für die eurozentrisch gepolten Ohren des Odysseus fremd und betörend wäre – so sehr, dass er Bienenwachs benötigt, um sein Schiff nicht gegen die Felsklippen zu steuern?

The title "sirene" is chosen because of the form of the piece. A slow build-up of more and more sound that finally disappears, felt a little faster, just as it came. 
Or does the title come after all because of the peculiar, spherical sound of the Shōs, which would be alien and beguiling to the Eurocentric ears of Odysseus - so much so that he needs beeswax to keep from steering his ship against the cliffs?

Hass.
Menschen. Mit Hoffnung, Liebe, Träumen.
Verschreckt. Entehrt, verlacht.
Fetzen, Fragmente.
Panik, Schmerz, Leid. Hervorstechende Hände.
Geduldiges Ertragen.
Ausharren, blutend.

trail kann auf verschiedene Weisen übersetzt werden: Als Substantiv mit „Pfad“ oder „Weg“, als Verb zum Beispiel mit „schleppen“, „hinterschleifen“, „(ver-)folgen“, „kriechen“ oder als to trail off mit „verhallen“ oder „sich verlieren“. Das Wort passt sehr gut zu den Assoziationen, die ich beim Betrachten zweier Gemälde von Arnulf Rainer empfinde. Sein Bild „Ohne Titel“  erinnert mich an die Zugwagons, mit denen Menschen in Konzentrationslager deportiert worden sind. Eine große Parallele dazu bildet für mich die Passion Jesu, die auf dem Gemälde „Ohrfeigen“ thematisiert wird. Plötzlich ein Lied, aus den Tiefen des Bewusstseins. In der Tiefe, am Boden, am Nullpunkt. ...Nearer, my God, to Thee... Nearer to Thee! E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me... still all my song shall be nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! Jerusalem of gold and of copper, and of light. Behold I am a violin for all your songs.

Patiently enduring.

The word trail has various meanings: As a noun with "path" or "way", as a verb for example with "to drag", "to trail behind", "(to) follow", "to crawl" or as to trail off with "to fade away" or "to get lost". The word fits very well with the associations I feel when I look at the two paintings by Arnulf Rainer. The painting "Untitled" reminds me of the train carriages used to deport people to concentration camps. A great parallel to this for me is the Passion of Jesus, which is the theme of the painting "Ohrfeigen". Suddenly a song, from the depths of consciousness. In the depths, at the bottom, at ground zero. ...Nearer, my God, to Thee.... Nearer to Thee! E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me... still all my song shall be nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!  Jerusalem of gold and of copper, and of light. Behold I am a violin for all your songs.

„Du“ - Titelgebendes Wort für die vom Bayerischen Landesjugendchor in Auftrag gegebene Komposition – gemeint ist damit der „Heilige Geist“, in dem Edith Stein den Raum sieht, der unser Sein umschließt und in sich birgt. Die junge Komponistin Elisabeth Fußeder hat ein Gedicht von E. Stein mit Psalmtexten verknüpft und daraus eine eindringliche Botschaft auf vielen musikalischen Ebenen formuliert. Nachdem der ganze Chor fragend in die Thematik gleitet, harmonisch sich auf unsicherem Terrain bewegend, tritt nach dem Intro das Soloquartett betend aus der Choreinheit und schafft sofort Bewusstsein für die existentielle Bedeutung unseres Geistes. Im Mittelteil mit dem Inhalt „fehlt er so versänke mein Sein im Abgrund“ werden die musikalischen Mittel zunehmend ihrer Ordnungen beraubt, eine klare Rhythmik und Harmonik entgleiten zunehmend, wobei aber über die Worte „die Liebe Gottes ist ausgegossen in unsere Herzen“ ein schwebender Raum musikalisch zuversichtlich offengehalten wird. Diese durch gesprochene und unklare Klangflächen nur angedeutete Zuversicht geht im dritten Abschnitt allerdings in eine ergreifende Metamorphose über, die wir als weit gespannten, ungreifbaren und unfassbaren Wandel aller kadenzalen Möglichkeiten erleben und falls wir uns am Schluss der Komposition bereits in voller Hoffnung in behütetem As - Dur zu den Worten „Ewige Liebe“ wähnen, so bleiben letztlich die Fragen in einem auskomponiertem Fade out am Ende doch offen.

"You" - the title word for the composition commissioned by the Bavarian State Youth Choir - refers to the "Holy Spirit", in whom Edith Stein sees the space that encloses and contains our being. The young composer Elisabeth Fußeder combined a poem by E. Stein with psalm texts and formulated a powerful message on many musical levels. After the whole choir glides questioningly into the theme, harmonically moving on uncertain terrain, the solo quartet prayerfully emerges from the choral unit after the intro and immediately creates awareness of the existential significance of our spirit. In the middle section with the content "if he is absent, my being sinks into the abyss", the musical means are increasingly robbed of their orders, a clear rhythm and harmony increasingly slip away, although a floating space is musically confidently kept open via the words "the love of God is poured into our hearts". In the third section, however, this confidence, only hinted at by spoken and unclear sound surfaces, turns into a poignant metamorphosis, which we experience as a wide-stretched, intangible and incomprehensible change of all cadential possibilities, and if at the end of the composition we already believe ourselves to be full of hope in a sheltered A-flat major to the words "eternal love", in the end the questions remain open in a composed fade out.

Das Stück ist der jüdischen Schriftstellerin Ilse Weber gewidmet, die 1944 von den Nationalsozialisten ermordet wurde. Sein Text enthält Webers Gedicht „Ich sitze an deinem Lager“, das an ihren Sohn Hanus gerichtet war, den sie vor ihrer eigenen Deportation zu ihrer Freundin Lilian nach Schweden schicken musste und nie wieder sehen sollte. Zum anderen enthält die Komposition Auszüge aus Briefen Ilse Webers an Lilian.
Es finden sich in Text und Komposition Angst, Verzweiflung, Sorge, Härte, Verbitterung, eine erstarkende böse Vorahnung, ein verzweifelter Ruf, eine letzte Hoffnung. 
Es findet sich tiefstes Bedauern. 
„Nachtgedanken" ist die zweite Komposition, die ich der jüdischen Schriftstellerin Ilse Weber widme. Ich bin bei der Komposition bewusst hinter dem Text zurückgetreten, weil der Text und seine Verfasserin mir so wichtig sind, dass ich sie – in meinem möglichen Rahmen – an die Öffentlichkeit tragen möchte.

The piece is dedicated to the Jewish writer Ilse Weber, who was murdered by the National Socialists in 1944. Its text contains Weber's poem "Ich sitze an deinem Lager", which was addressed to her son Hanus, whom she had to send to her friend Lilian in Sweden before her own deportation and was never to see again. On the other hand, the composition contains excerpts from Ilse Weber's letters to Lilian.
The text and composition contain fear, despair, worry, harshness, bitterness, a growing sense of foreboding, a desperate call, a last hope. 
There is deepest regret. 
"Nachtgedanken" is the second composition I have dedicated to the Jewish writer Ilse Weber. I have deliberately taken a back seat to the text in the composition because the text and its author are so important to me that I would like to bring them - within my possible scope - to the public.

Composed by Keith Kramer and performed by Anna D'Errico, piano and Sara De Cicco, percussion in Rieti, Italy on July 12, 2014.

Rinnovo is a work for piano and percussion (vibraphone, cymbal and bass drum) that employs a numerical sequence that permeates the work via numerous parameters. Another feature of the work is the focus on tone color, which is achieved via conventional and extended techniques. The programmatic implications of the title reflect the composer's wish to find meaning and hope in the future, while reflecting on and learning to live with the past. This work is dedicated to Dr. Li Chen Kramer.

Keith Kramer is a composer of over 40 works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo instruments and electronic media. The London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Miran Vaupotić, recently recorded Keith's work for cello and orchestra, Luce del Sole, featuring cellist Ovidiu Marinescu and conductor Miran Vaupotić. Keith's music has also been performed and recorded by the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra, the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, David Taylor, Leonard Garrison and many others. Recent performances of his work include two highly successful all-Kramer programs at New York's Merkin Hall, documented on the DVD Beyond Sonic Boundaries Live! 2010. Additional all-Kramer releases include the critically acclaimed albums Causal Dualism and Emerge. Keith's work Sogni was recently premiéred and toured by acclaimed British pianist Martin Jones and a European premiére of his work Rinnovo, for piano and percussion, featured internationally renowned pianist Anna D'Errico.
