“Our daughter said the most fascinating sentence for turning the room light off, which was “turn the dark on”. I absolutely loved this perspective and had to include the line as a lyric; this spark inspired the song and its direction. Echoing those late night wonderings when the mind is overactive I use insomnia as an acronym in the chorus to ponder if people are asleep in life and need to be inspired to wake up and really live? My hope in both the music and lyrics is to capture the restlessness, fatigue and high energy of insomnia.”

The latest track from my Not Completely Useless project. I tend to think of it as a low-key one for me - still quite a bit going on; Sonic Youth-style triplet feel intro, bass grooves, organ, touches of syncopation and a change of pace for the outro... there's just not as much guitar heroics as usual.

This one is about missing my kids when I was away at a festival. And my eldest daughter - then 6 I think - wrote the lyrics for the chorus.

@TexMex-Shaman of the Eclectic Collective had the cool idea to add a short hambone performance to the 'Country Ham' track he wrote and invited us to play on. He originally asked if anyone would like to try, but with no takers, he did it himself. I wasn't familiar with the term before but once I heard him perform it, I realized it was something I'd tried before too, and asked if I could take a stab at it after all. You hear it at the outro of the song as the music fades, but this is an isolated recording of just the hambone stuff - in this case boot stomps, hand & body slaps, and vocalizations. Thanks Tex for this awesome song, and teaching me this technique rich in Southern tradition. As a percussionist, this was a treat to record!

What happens when the commercial facade of Christmas cracks? "The Throne of Styrofoam" is a dark, cinematic Symphonic Rock anthem that dives into the mind of a weary mall Santa. Surrounded by plastic ivy and manufactured joy, he sees the holiday for what it has become—until a heartbreaking encounter with a grieving child changes the frequency of the night.

Drawing inspiration from the epic storytelling of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, this track blends sweeping orchestral strings, aggressive rhythmic hits, and a shredding neoclassical guitar solo to tell a story of apathy, guilt, and the harsh reality behind the red suit. It tears down the decorations to find the real human emotion underneath.

I am shifting in a velvet chair that smells of cheap cologne
