My sound work encompasses field recordings, electroacoustic and acousmatic music, text-sound scores, free-improvised low-tech electronics, and compositions for acoustic instruments. 

Historian of music and listening in Mughal India. Through stories about powerful courtesans, legendary maestros and captivated patrons I write of sovereignty and selfhood, friendship and desire, sympathy and loss, and power, worldly and strange as the Mughal empire gave way to British rule. My latest co-edited book is Monsoon Feelings: A History of Emotions in the Rain.

The People's Archive of Rural India (PARI) is both a living journal and an archive aimed at recording the everyday lives of everyday people. And to do that across what is, in many ways, the most complex and diverse part of the planet: rural India, with 833 million human beings, 700 living languages, multiple cultures and unrivalled occupational diversity. PARI is an online archive seeking to capture these many worlds on one website. PARI hosts and combines video, still photo, audio and text archives. There is content we already have and content we are newly generating. Both will take time and effort to organize and load.

The sonologist moves in the field of electroacoustic music, computer music and sound art. Instead of composing ‘with’ sounds, as is generally the case in instrumental music, in sonology the sound itself is composed in such a way that it gives expression to musical form. This can take place on the basis of the physical principles of sound, on the basis of perception or on the basis of purely compositional ideas.
