with Dagon, I endeavored to go beyond 'Invisible Cloak'. Dagon is written in multiple bpms. Each time I reloaded the .wav into a new project, I would change the bpm a little, from higher to lower and back again over many reiterations. In this way I could approach the canvas from multiple angles in time. It is not in any specific time signature. The time signature is fluid and morphing constantly. It is written off grid. I approached this piece as a visual art, not exactly as music.

Hell Canto

On 7.10.23, Palestinian forces, led by Hamas, broke down the fence separating the Gaza Strip from Israel and unleashed a savage day of slaughter and kidnapping that ended with 1,195 dead on the Israeli side and 251 taken as hostages. The Israeli response was just as savage but much longer lasting and much, much more devastating. It resulted (at the time of writing) in around  72,525 direct deaths (70,525 - most likely, many more - Palestinians, approximately 80% non combatants, and 2,109 Israelis, largely soldiers) in Gaza, as well as at least 171,000 Palestinians injured, compounded by a genocidal policy of starvation and destruction of civil order. A response that has lain waste to most of Gaza and accelerated the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank - where there have been 1,012 Palestinian deaths caused by Israeli settlers and the IDF since October ’23. The Gaza Health Ministry does not include those who have died from preventable disease, malnutrition and other consequences of the war. There have also been many deaths and injured in Lebanon, Syria, Iran and Yemen.

The horrors of the Unholy Land felt near at home, and like the invasion of Ukraine, pushed me to give some kind of personal response - however pointless and inadequate - beyond following and sharing news and commentaries. Already far into Luna rising, a text and electronica album about Ukraine and Russia, I didn't feel capable of responding with texts so I embarked on a wordless album called Hell Canto, a term I’d coined years ago as a gentle provocation - a name for a vocal aesthetic antithetical to bel canto, and which has some of its roots in the vocal experiences of Alfred Wolfsohn during WW1.

The parameters are the same for each of the pieces, each made as sound poetry via comprovisation derived from vocal improvisations and electronic manipulations. In November '25, having recorded 50 pieces, I stopped adding more - also the fragile, frequently ignored October '25 ceasefire was remaining in place though in practice ‘ceasefire’ has been a bad joke, with no sign of real peace and humanitarian and political solutions on the horizon. I split the tracks into 2 CDs of 25 tracks each. The first called Nal-yol-hund and the second Hund-yol-nal.
