In Irish Mythology, Tír na nÓg is the mystical realm of everlasting youth and beauty - a supernatural otherworld which surpasses time and space.
This piece seeks to evoke the transcendental journey between realms through the 'mist' - a passageway into Tír na nÓg. On a broader level, this piece seeks to explore the nature of reality, specifically the way sonic features can elevate and heighten our
sense of reality and/or depict a shift from our own subjective reality in a perceivable way. Field recordings and pre-recorded audio alongside live electronics will be utilised in order to establish a clear reality so that there is an audible transition in states.

Tír na nÓg challenges us to question our relationship with our own finiteness and connection to the natural world through the reflection of a mystic utopianism in which spirituality is an essential lifeform which binds together every element of the universe.

Lady Jane -  For Violin x Cello

In Celtic Mythology, the ‘Aos sí’ are fairy people who live underground, in the
otherworldly mounds and hills that dot the Irish countryside. They are said to be
descendants of the goddess ‘Danu’ and are described as walking the border between the
living, and the otherworld. Inspired by this, this piece seeks to explore the ephemeral
tone qualities of the bass flute - exploring the delicate higher register and then the very
lowest register, running through a series of live DSP devices which will help to extend
and convey a timbre of the otherworld.

Lauren Doherty is an honours year composition and sonic arts student at the New Zealand School of Music - Te Kōkī. She is most passionate about telling stories inspired by her heritage, paying homage to those who have shaped her voice. She is inspired by traditional Celtic music, and interested in its interconnection through mythology, ideology and poetic expression to other cultures. Her main musical interests center predominantly around electroacoustic and electronic music, and the way these can interact with classical and traditional forms of music and performance.
