nonclassical is a music promoter, record label and events producer presenting the best new classical, experimental and electronic music. Crossing genre and defying convention, we develop, produce and promote innovative music – supporting emerging artists and bringing new music to new audiences.

Founded in 2004 by composer Gabriel Prokofiev, nonclassical began as a clubnight focused on presenting new music in non-traditional performance spaces. We have since presented events across the UK and worldwide, and our record label is home to artists including Tansy Davies, Aïsha Orazbayeva, Gabriel Prokofiev, Langham Research Centre, Tom Richards and many more.

nonclassical is based in London and led by Executive Director Natalia Franklin Pierce with a small, but perfectly formed team.

I wish I had practiced more when I had piano lessons as a kid. But then again, playing NES had as much influence on my inner artist as 3D software and Paul Feyerabend. So instead of playing any of my instruments (at all or at least properly) we got fancy software these days. And there you go ...

All my songs are original compositions (or happy accidents).

Music where millennial sound design meets classical harmony, producing moments of sheer beauty encased in hard shells of structured progressions both melodic and harmonic. Electronic music using classical forms with an element of music concrete. Music with orderly planned development, structured, with a destination. Music that demands and rewards attention, that continues to deliver new and fresh insights with repeated listening. Music that requires you to surrender and give yourself up to it for a period, that provides more than a single mood moment or transitory feeling. Perhaps more like a compendium. A book series. A world of its own in multifarious detail, with meaning and which touches deeply.


In my other life I am a British University Professor who has authored a couple of books and more than 100 published papers, and my research is applied all around the world. In this life I am a composer-producer of electro-acoustic music. I eat, drink, and breathe music, study music, analyse music, play music, and create music. Max Cooper is an electronic composer, multi-disciplinary artist, music label founder and former scientist who has carved out a unique space in music and visual art.

He holds a PhD in computational biology at the same time as being the first contemporary electronic musician to perform at the ancient Acropolis theatre in Athens and one of the first clutch of musicians to produce in Dolby Atmos.

Cooper has enquired for over 15 years through music, collaborations, and his label Mesh, to explore the intersections between the arts and sciences with installations, performances, immersive experiences, online media, music videos and live events.  Anchored throughout is his emotive approach, connecting how ideas and forms feel, in a manner accessible to us all. 
 
As an artist synonymous with the evolution of club culture, Cooper honed his craft as a DJ with a 10 year residency at legendary Midlands techno event Firefly where he formed a foundational relationship with Architecture Social Club, with whom he still collaborates on extravagant immersive installations.

"I want to encourage the acceptance of electronic music as an art form like any other. Bringing electronic music and abstract audio-visual projects into concert halls, museums and galleries is liberating - the art world opens up doors to communicate in ways that aren’t possible elsewhere."
  
Pivoting from computational biology to electronic music might not seem like the most natural career transition, but for Cooper the commonalities are obvious:
