Founding resident DJ and promoter of Vancouver’s longest-running dancehall weekly Ting since 2007, and core member of the mighty Lighta! Sound crew, she is true to the origins of sound system culture while tirelessly working to push the vibes forward in the present.

Recently re-dubbing himself as Scratchclart, Scratcha DVA has never been wont to stick to one path. The rave eccentric and Hyperdub affiliate has over the course of his career explored the murky depths of grime, UK funky and gqom. 2019 has already been a prolific year for him – firing out almost one release per month, he’s showing no signs of slowing down. His latest is a collaboration with producer and vocalist KG, aka Karen Nyame, mining some UK funky-meets-gqom flavour (or as he recently tweeted: “UK Funky + Gqom = UK Gqom. Qwik maths”). ‘Touch’, out via Hyperdub this Friday, comes hot on the heels of his collaboration with Lady Lykez, for their ‘Muhammad Ali’ EP released back in May, while Scratcha also recently dropped the ‘DRMTRK EP VII‘, an angular four-piece of gqom at its most deviant. In the same vein of the EP, Scratcha’s Dummy Mix smashes together some of the best of gqom and UK funky known to man, from DJ Lag to the allusive SingleWhiteFemale project who he’s previously collaborated with (could it be Scratcha himself?), and it’s a ride full of breathless drops and uptempo wickedness. Straight from Kampala, Uganda, Kampire sends a contribution to the Oscillate Mix Series. Easily sliding through the genres, she combines local influences with a global take on all things bass. Kampire is not only a core member of Uganda's Nyege Nyege crew and an ambassador for (East) African music and culture but she is fighting for the good cause by focussing her energy on the queer/femme community and helping to create safer clubbing spaces in her hometown Kampala and beyond (also check out the "Salooni" art project she participated in, link below).

When Kampire entered the dancefloor and started DJing at last years Oscillate anniversary, people were captivated by her seamless change of speed, energy and rhythm. The mix she provided here is a perfect example for this!

This set is a high-energy heater at 130 bpm, libra-liciously dancing across the Black Atlantic musical diaspora of afrobeats, uk funky, bassline and garage house. She’s serving us the savvy selections of a Polaris Music Prize grand juror, mixed with the soul and skill of a Director at SheDJsYYC, where she offers DJ mentorship and workshops for women in Western Canada. 

You can hear the instrumental of D Big Kitty’s recent debut single with Teafannie, Ladies of the Dance, mixed in here with Mina & Bryte’s “One Leg”, and it’s great to hear new made-in-Canada afrobeats hold their own with contemporary African anthems by producers like Gafacci, Moris Beat, Citizen Boy, Pl4net Dust and Boddhi Satva. 
 
This set is straight up banger after banger and doesn’t let up with spontaneity and stamina. D Big Kitty is on her own next level throwing in heady UK body music by producers like Throwing Snow and Scratchclart, big room Canadian house like Neon Steve and Egyptrixx, and the list of vocalists featured throughout is epic including Magugu, Badi, Lady Lykez, Sweetie Irie, TT The Artist, Davido, Movado, Fox, Mr. Eazi, Bunji Garlin and Stylo G… even Ultra Naté! Yes, this is the set we’ve always dreamed of that includes both classic Strictly Rhythm soulful house and Beyonce’s Lion King soundtrack. Sheep don’t run with lions, and we can’t not dance to D Big Kitty!

She’s affiliated with an inspiring alignment of Calgary collectives championing women, LGBTQ and BIPOC culture including Tigerstyle DJs, Big Kitty Crew, Afros In The City, Umoja Sessions, and Pink Flamingo YYC. She wears protective swag from her own lifestyle brand SheSoShaded while speaking out and organizing in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. We stan for all of this.
