E498 | The history of North Africa is usually framed by the period of French colonialism and the era of independent nations that followed. But what happens if we let an object like the 78 rpm record do the work of periodization? In this episode, we talk to Christopher Silver about the unique vantage point that gramophone records offer on the emergence of national culture in the Maghreb during the first half of the 20th century. We will explore the work of artists whose lives straddled Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco as well as the colonial metropoles, and we will highlight the role of North African Jewish singers, musicians, producers, and promoters in the development of the region's music industry.

Christopher Silver is the Segal Family Assistant Professor in Jewish History and Culture in the Department of Jewish Studies at McGill University. He earned his PhD in History from UCLA. He is the author of numerous article on history and music in North Africa, including most recently in the International Journal of Middle East Studies.

Chris Gratien is Assistant Professor of History at University of Virginia, where he teaches classes on global environmental history and the Middle East. He is currently preparing a monograph about the environmental history of the Cilicia region of the former Ottoman Empire from the 1850s until the 1950s.

ماذا يحدث حين تنسى تناول حبة مضاد القلق في يوم ما ؟
في الصباح تبدأ في التساؤل عن ماهية الشيء الذي نسيته. شيء ما سقط منك.. لا تعرف ما هو لكنك تشعر به بقوة. بعد عدة ساعات تبدأ في التساؤل حول مقدار الثقة الذي يمكن منحه للأخرون. للرجل العجوز في السوبر ماركت ربع مقدار من الثقة... اليوم عليك مراجعة الحساب وراءه كما لا تفعل مطلقا. لزر المصعد نصف مقدر.. لا ضرر بالغ من الوقوف لثوان أمام شقة القنصل البلغاري عن طريق الخطأ.. ما دمت لم ترتكب أي شيء يشك زارعوا كاميرات السلم وضباط الكنيسة الأرمينية في الجهة المقابلة أن لديك أي عداوات واضحة مع رواد القداس. للصديق مقدار إلا ربع.. اليوم سنفترض أن كل يأتي محملاً بالرسائل السيئة... لا تترك الهاتف.. لا تترك أية رسائل معلقة.. ربما واحدة منها تبلغك بحلول المصيبة.. عليك أن تكون مستعدًا. في المساء تختفي ابتسامتك وتحل محلها العصبية النابعة عن خوف غير مبرر. بعد المساء بساعة تعود للتساؤل حول مقادير الثقة المتاحة لمنحها للجميع...في طريق العودة يتصل بك حبيبك.. صدفة... وحين تغلق الهاتف.. تفكر... هل يكفيه عشرة مقادير ممتلئة عن أخرها بالثقة أم يجدر بك زيادتها؟
تصل إلى المنزل وتبتلع حبة الدواء... بعد قليل.. تفكر.. كيف يمكن تحويل عدد سبعة حبات أسبوعية من مضاد القلق إلى مقادير إضافية من الثقة تمكنك من منح الولد الغلبان جنيهاً دون الظن أن ثمة من يترصد لك ويرميه كطعم لخطفك؟

Comparison of nature soundscape microphone arrays by Andrew Skeoch and Doug Quin. 

4 microphone rigs were set up side by side, all axis aligned: MS (DQ), SASS (AS), Soundfield SP200 Ambisonic (DQ) and Iso-binaural (AS). 

All recording onto Sound Devices 7 series recorders at 24bit, DQ at 48kHz, AS at 44.1kHz. DQ's raw levels were quite low. The MS rig was close to the ground (see pic)

MS: Sennheiser MKH 30 + MKH 40 in Røde blimp
SASS: pair Sennheiser MKH 20s in Crown SASS head
Ambisonic: Soundfield SP200 Ambisonic, upright in Røde blimp
Iso-Binaural: Pair Sennheiser MKH 8020s, ~20cm apart, oriented 180º with convex baffles 

Location: Wet sclerophyll forest in small gully, Lower Gellibrand River, Otway Ranges, Vic. 18th February, approx 7am (post dawn chorus)

The ambisonic microphone can be rendered into almost any configuration, using Harpex proprietary software. DQ created several different renders as examples of what it can do. Screen shots of the software settings for reference. The MS rig has been decoded to stereo wide. 

In preparing edits,  DQ's files were down-sampled to 44.1 and everything to 16bit. Levels are subjective; all files have been normalised referencing the noise floor. This means some of the ‘noisier’ mics have been attenuated slightly to balance, thus reducing peak birdsong levels.
