Kindness Can't Speak

She comes as light or as shadow, as storm or as breath. She appears and she disappears, untamed. 
Love, a fleeting spark that molds our soul, giving us strength, taking it again, and often she is just an echo lost in time's quite depth. 
A sensual saxophone, a contemplative piano, and a restrained string orchestra mourn the elegy of love. Behind the veil of tender notes and simple melodies and harmonies, there is a straining pulse, uneven, aching, drowned in melancholy. Deep within it is quietness, a love undone, too sad to tell.

Proud to announce my first collaboration with folk string artist extraordinaire Don Jennings.  Don establishes the feel of the song with his strong rhythm strumming--almost the feel of a Celtic stomp, trying to get the mud off one's boots, but allows me plenty of space for my Requinto guitar that sounds a little like a mandolin in the center-left channel. Without a doubt, my most meaningful performance was playing the piano for my mother at the end of her life. Over nine months, she fought an aggressive cancer that stole her speech, leaving us with a great struggle to communicate. At that point in time, music became our language. As I played her favorite songs during my visits, we would share memories woven into the melodies without saying a word. The music brought her peace and it was a balm for our hearts.

This story, however, isn't about sadness; it's about the profound power of music. While music may not solve every problem, it can offer comfort, lift spirits, relieve stress, and help us shift our focus on difficult days. The joy of music is felt by both the listener and the musician sharing their gift. It is the unique power of music that inspired this composition. While lyrics are not yet finished, the opening line defines the central theme: "Grey skies loom, and storms are on the way.  But for now, I think, I'm gonna sing myself a better day."*

Donde El Gesto Habla (“Where the Gesture Speaks”) was born from an unexpected invitation to perform at an international animal-rights event. I wasn’t ready for the stage, yet the gesture—someone truly caring about my music and what it stands for—spoke louder than words.
The piece doesn’t run; it walks. Two even steps, like two hands reaching for each other. Deep down a low heartbeat holds the breath; above it, a gentle voice answers in fragments—one held word, then two whispers—climbing and descending in small steps. The wave swells, lays down, grows quiet again. And often, before it fades, it leaves a tiny falling sigh, like a softly spoken “yes.”
Dedicated to those who give voice to the voiceless.
