This mix is a mood board for our project, “Island Life.” It's essentially our Jamaican road trip playlist. We spent a great deal of time cruising around the island - from Kingston to the Blue Mountains to Ocho Rios - listening to many of these songs. This set reflects our sonic influences, highlights new music that we're feeling and, in tribute to Jamaica, includes some of our favorite roots reggae and rocksteady tunes. Taken together, these sounds make up the musical palette that colors and shapes our collaboration.

Serial Experiments - L#76 | Guest Mix: Andrew Claristidge

Over the past 18 months, London based DJ Marc Hasler has slowly grown his reputation both as a successful resident and also as guest DJ across the country. Comfortable to take the limelight with peak time chug and synthwave, he undeniably excels when taking the reins early doors. With gigs last year sharing the same event space as ALFOS, Man Power and Tronik Youth, he has further festival slots lined up for the summer. We asked him to submit a fresh start to the week selection, and he did not disappoint.

Marc Hasler - The 'Monday Is Ok' Ransom Note Mix

Although he has had a fair amount of success as a producer on We Play House (most famously as part of FCL) San Soda is still a DJ first and foremost. The Belgian is a renowned vinyl hoarder who spends most of the time between gigs in places like Chicago, Shanghai and Sydney digging for new beats. Those beats can be anything from afro to funk, disco to deep house, and he threads them together with very little reliance on FX and tricks, instead he prises sequencing and selection over all and can ether hypnotise dancers in elongated groves or switch up the mood with every new track. 

The mix he has put together for us here is over two hours of seriously feel good stuff that will keep the vibe of summer alive all through winter: lots of funky songs, dazzling disco delights and authentic old school jams get stitched together in effortless ways. Colour and charm, good vibes and unpredictable selection characterise the whole thing and confirm San Soda to be a party starting DJ with slick skills to match his sick selections.

Brownswood Recordings and The Steve Reid Foundation celebrate the life and spirit of one of the world’s greatest jazz drummers – Steve Reid – via a deluxe 12” featuring a brand new interpretation of the classic ‘Lions Of Judah’ by emanative &amp; Ahmed Abdullah backed with a Four Tet re-edit.

Steve Reid was an amazing drummer with a long and illustrious history that stretched from working with James Brown, Miles Davis and Fela Kuti through to his own Steve Reid Trio and more recently working with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet). He died from throat cancer in the US in April 2010 without the money for treatment that could have saved his life.

The Steve Reid Foundation was established by Gilles Peterson in memory of his friend. The aims of the foundation are to fundraise on behalf of struggling musicians in need of help and support. All profits from the sale of the ‘Lions Of Judah’ 12” will go to the foundation.
