Given the success of our previous challenge, I decided to share another haiku by 20th century poet Ozaki Hōsai.
Hōsai graduated from the Tokyo Imperial University, where he studied law. He got off to a good start but decided to give up his home, family, and business to jump from one militant religion of Japan to the other.
Just like Taneda Santoka, Hōsai abandoned the traditional verse form of his time and mostly looked at the austere confines of his life for inspiration.

The Field [naviarhaiku448]

I recently listened, enthralled, to a wonderful piece of music here on SC, encapsulating Seagull's childhood memories of boats and the sea, produced in collaboration with David and his guitar artistry.  Having grown up on the banks of a river on the edge of the North Sea in a culture where fishing was an integral part of the local DNA, I enthused about the music; it absolutely captured the essence of sea salt in the air, and the dreams and memories it evokes.  I was thrilled therefore when David came up with a suggestion.....

Seagull, David, thank you so much for allowing me to add my own little nuance to this work;  I'm very proud indeed to be part of the result.

The gentle times, wherein my mind

Plastic water ocean streams

Silenced of the chuggy motors
Decimated by their quotas
Where the haddock, cod and herring bloaters?

The factory ships that hoovered clean
Of scaly friends the sea main wide.
Its cheaply speckled high protein
Squandered as the herring gull cried.

Where the fishers, where the boats?
Where the nets, and yellow rubber coats?
Where the pots, and lines and corky floats?

...wherein my mind

Playing this again, I realised I'd mastered a lot of detail out of this so, here is my attempt at a remaster. Hope you like it! December 2023. 

As a child, the night was full of mystery. My twin sister was a somnambulist, and I too was known to walk if I had a fever. Looking into the face of a sleepwalker is quite disturbing - it's the open but dead eyes, no hint of recognition; it used to make the hair stand up on my neck. 
The cover is a detail from a painting by the innovative French painter, Gustave Courbet. I think it's fair to say he nailed that look.

Many months passed playing that game of business.  

Even though Geo was still agitated and uncomfortable in that lifestyle - Moe seemed to be in His element there. So Geo left Moe in charge most of the time.

The charade of Moe Frank was no longer so laborious to maintain. Moe had control far more often than Geo did now. And Moe had taken on a life of His own. He had gained momentum, and His power was growing with each passing month.  

Geo sat in the back-seat now, trying timidly to navigate in the direction of a genuine human connection that He longed for so much since He left His little village, His few dear friends, and His family - but He didn’t quite know how to get there from where He was, or if He was even successful enough or good enough yet to deserve a connection like that.  

He had money now, which bought Him some influence - and Moe commanded a beguiling charm, which had won Him some admiration, and respect from others. 
But He still didn’t feel the connection that He so deeply craved.

  It didn’t matter anyway, because Moe was at the wheel now, and He Loved being in the drivers seat.  

Of course, Moe /did/ recognize Geo’s desire for connection - after all, it was His desire too.  But Moe was incapable of seeing past the surface of things. 
So when Moe looked for connection, He was sold on the first solution that He could see. The salacious and conspicuous culture of Sex caught His eye immediately and quickly convinced Him of it’s lustre.

  “We could use some of /that/ connection.”

  Moe immersed Himself in this new game to master -  Once again, He set aside Geo’s morals, and began to manipulate the hearts and minds of others to get what He wanted.
 People became like objects, to compete with or to win over as some sort of trophy.

  Geo became sick with a growing shame, and guilt at the things that He had allowed Moe to do in an attempt to feel worthy of that ‘dream-life’ and all the happiness of it that He still desired so badly.  

Soon, shame and guilt became all that Geo could feel.
 But He could not bear to feel them for long. 
So He buried them in the same grave that He laid His heart to rest many moons ago.  

A sort of - emptiness, was all that was left in the cemetery of Geo’s soul.  

These shallow connections wore thinner and thinner.  

Geo’s buried heart could barely be heard beating at it’s cage.  Moe had become so strong already, and He did not care about anything but His goals and what it took to achieve them.

 All the dirt that was excavated for Moe’s tunnel vision was placed upon Geo’s heart.
 And with every sexual escapade the void of genuine intimacy grew larger, and went deeper.  

Moe’s solution: “More. More is always better. People Love ‘more’.”  

TL;DR  

Just as Moe learned to manipulate the systems of Business to gain power, money and respect,
  He now learned how to manipulate the systems of psychology and emotion. His various dalliances extracted just enough affection, intimacy, and satisfaction to keep Geo’s lonely, empty murmurs from being too much of a distraction.  

Here we find the correlation between His…
