Energy Anthem

From the composer: "Air Traffic" is about the delicate balance required to keep the skies moving—thousands of aircraft crossing paths, landing safely, delivering millions of people across the world. It’s a system built on precision, communication, and trust. But what happens when that system is infected by chaos? As the new presidential administration dismantles protections, Americans are left trying to hold everything together with fewer resources. Planes are crashing—literally—as uncertainty builds, and we collectively cross our fingers. This piece reflects that overwhelm, starting with driving percussion that spins up into a careful cacophony.

Air Traffic

From the composer: Believe it or not, this is my first time scoring someone else’s trailer. Usually, I compose music for my own videos—especially my Scoring the News project—but this time, I had to work with what was on screen. No edits, no re-cutting. Just music supporting the story.

The video comes from Spitfire Audio, where I get a lot of my virtual instruments. Their Colossus Re-Scoring Competition doubles as a way to promote their new Albion orchestral library, so I figured I’d lean in. Every sound in this score comes from Spitfire libraries—and I call the piece "Helios." So, what’s in here? 

🎹 First, a nod to my film-scoring hero, Philip Glass, using Spitfire’s free “Glass Piano” library. (Fun fact: I write every song by dabbling with this virtual replica of his actual piano.)

📢 The free “Foghorn” library, and two from my Spitfire Labs subscription called “Black Hole” and “Cinematic Percussion.”

🎻 And of course, the mainstay—”Spitfire Symphonic Strings."

From the composer: "Don’t Fight the Apple" is about the pursuit of knowledge that isn’t easy to accept at first, but that ultimately brings peace. I wanted the music to feel a little uncomfortable yet intriguing, with the promise of clarity somewhere on the other side. I think of the tedious process of assembling a mandala, which I understand to symbolize the universe and the path to wisdom. I once watched monks create one, grain by grain. It required incredible patience. Then when it was complete, they let it go.

From the composer: Writing this piece from along Mirror Lake, I thought of the beautiful summers we've spent in the Adirondacks together as a family. Time goes by quickly. It is paired in theme with another of my pieces, "I Knew You."
