It begins with the quiet realization that things are going awry, unfolding into a slow-moving lament—a reflection on the country’s concession to a deepened darkness and an uncertain future.

From the composer: This piece, "Holding Hands," is about that moment when a couple decides to reach for each other’s hand. It starts tentatively, but then something magical happens—a sense of connection that’s hard to put into words. As a gay man of a generation taught to be cautious about public displays of affection, holding hands has never become routine. This piece tries to capture the tingling joy from that gesture because it’s not something to take for granted.

From the composer: "Out Flows Love" evolved from a sketch called "In Creeps Anger," which I initially composed while processing my emotions about the LA fires. At the same time, I happened to see a video where the actor Jim Carrey talks about how artists absorb tragedy and try to transform it into something beautiful to share with the world. So I worked through the anger of the original sketch and processed it as this piece, "Out Flows Love." It's a meditation on the kindness of neighbors helping neighbors, healing of the human spirit, and the possibility of better times to come.

From the composer: "In Creeps Anger" was written amid the LA fires, as my own frustration and helplessness increased with every news alert. Watching from afar as the flames spread, I couldn’t shake the voice reminding me that we arrived here through compounding negligence. That’s what I feel in this piece—the tension rising, the urgency growing. Ultimately, I was able to process that energy and transform it into something else. That transformation became its companion piece, "Out Flows Love."

From the composer: "Air Traffic" is about the delicate balance required to keep the skies moving—thousands of aircraft crossing paths, landing safely, delivering millions of people across the world. It’s a system built on precision, communication, and trust. But what happens when that system is infected by chaos? As the new presidential administration dismantles protections, Americans are left trying to hold everything together with fewer resources. Planes are crashing—literally—as uncertainty builds, and we collectively cross our fingers. This piece reflects that overwhelm, starting with driving percussion that spins up into a careful cacophony.

From the composer: "Foot Play" started as a challenge—to score a bizarre moment making headlines. A mysterious hacker took over public televisions inside HUD’s offices, broadcasting an AI-generated video of the president kissing the DOGE billionaire's feet, with the words "LONG LIVE THE REAL KING" emblazoned across the screen. Naturally, I thought: Doesn’t this need some music? The result is "Foot Play"—a piece suggesting an infatuated and impetuous royalty.

From the composer: Believe it or not, this is my first time scoring someone else’s trailer. Usually, I compose music for my own videos—especially my Scoring the News project—but this time, I had to work with what was on screen. No edits, no re-cutting. Just music supporting the story.

The video comes from Spitfire Audio, where I get a lot of my virtual instruments. Their Colossus Re-Scoring Competition doubles as a way to promote their new Albion orchestral library, so I figured I’d lean in. Every sound in this score comes from Spitfire libraries—and I call the piece "Helios." So, what’s in here? 

🎹 First, a nod to my film-scoring hero, Philip Glass, using Spitfire’s free “Glass Piano” library. (Fun fact: I write every song by dabbling with this virtual replica of his actual piano.)

📢 The free “Foghorn” library, and two from my Spitfire Labs subscription called “Black Hole” and “Cinematic Percussion.”

🎻 And of course, the mainstay—”Spitfire Symphonic Strings."

From the composer: I wrote this song for my husband to celebrate our 15-year wedding anniversary. Admittedly, it turned out a bit darker than I first expected—because I found myself dwelling on our inevitable last moment, and never wanting him to leave this Earth. Still, beneath it all, I hear nostalgia for a life well-lived together. Love you, dear. Happy anniversary.

From the composer: I wrote "Dharma" because I hope that social media, which has more often been a tool for spreading hate, can fulfill its potential to instead spark a collective awakening. The footage you're seeing (source: Storyblocks) is from the Borobudur Temple Compounds, a Buddhist temple dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries, in central Java, Indonesia. "Dharma" is written for piano using the Lydian scale, which I've heard associated with spiritual ascendance.

From the composer: I can see a cottage along the river, just by the bridge, during a foggy sunrise, as the family inside awakens for another day of the small dramas and quiet beauty that make life worth living. I wrote this piece with that kind of scene in mind, and I hope someone might consider it for the opening credits of a television series.

From the composer: "Don’t Fight the Apple" is about the pursuit of knowledge that isn’t easy to accept at first, but that ultimately brings peace. I wanted the music to feel a little uncomfortable yet intriguing, with the promise of clarity somewhere on the other side. I think of the tedious process of assembling a mandala, which I understand to symbolize the universe and the path to wisdom. I once watched monks create one, grain by grain. It required incredible patience. Then when it was complete, they let it go.
