As the old saying goes, if it's not broke don't fix it but there was a new order and everyone had to respect it. They were ready to turn everything on its head, whether people liked it or not...

Madrid-based producer Fernanda Arrau has called on another group of artists to contribute to the third compilation on her United Colors of Rhythm label. She's continuing her commitment to spotlight artists from different countries, this time bringing on board producers from Chile, Spain and Mexico - namely Alejandro Paz, Moo Moonster and Parissior, Nico Castro, Pvlomo and Kresy. The collection of club-ready tracks connects the dots between electro, house, wave and indie dance, whilst connecting like-minded musicians who hail from all over the world.

Lazily, the tide rolls back in, caressing the shore in a single, sonorous manoeuvre. Leeds-based house producer Lone Saxon drops anchor for the first Balearic Ensemble outing of 2023, bringing shipmates Running Hot, Orchid and DJ Phidas along for some extra sea-salt remix action. Get it on…
‘Raised By The Island’ is a deeply expressive ode to the rhythms of flora & fauna, underpinned by Lone Saxon’s unique spin on the balearic beat. A medley of imaginative melodies and percussive flourishes, skilfully padded with rousing vocal samples and bass pulled from deep down low. This is certified balearic hardware; we’re loving it, you will too.
Next up Running Hot steps things up a notch, kicking and convulsing into harder territories with a massive balearic breakbeat remix wrapped around a 90s prog vocal sample. His remix goes hard on percussion, pads and carbonated b-lines, reconceiving Lone Saxon’s island anthem into late night, hands-in-the-air tackle. HUGE summer tip (viva the balearic breakbeat)!
Next up is Moscow’s edit king Orchid, who delivers an inside-out rework where acid bass snakes through the gaps left between jaunty pad stabs and spirited snare cadences. It’s a letter from a faraway place, with tales of strange beasts and creatures; a place of endless summer from where you won’t want to leave.
Finally, Klasse Wreck’s DJ Phidas takes the helm, rounding off the EP with a suave, percussion-based reimagining of Lone Saxon’s balearic sensation. The Barcelona-via-Venezuela producer’s version chugs along, eclectic and unhurried, armed with space controller gurgles, polyrhythms and pitch-stretched drum samples for a carefully constructed dancefloor warm-up. Class action by Phidias to round off what might be our favourite package yet.

@modulaofficial 'Musical Journey' [@tartelet-records] oozes retro synth-funk from head to toe with its lusher-than-lush slap bass chords, sun-kissed Rhodes stabs and subtle tribal percs emerging from beyond tall walls of vegetation and fantasized waterfalls. When the sun begins to go down and the light attires itself in luscious gold nuances, you know it's time to let the funk speak, and Modula's got plenty of that.

Not An Animal are known for their heated takes on the art of disco-sampling house music, and Ess O Ess is one of the key factors in defining that sound. This comes through in spades on Take You To A Secret Place, where the title track comes marching out atop a deadly bassline that will cut through any mix to get the people freaking out. The dub mix is equally deadly, flying a generous dose of cosmic sparkle into the mix without losing the punch in the original production. Kuniyuki Hard takes a daring approach that slows the track down to a creep and emphasises space and tension. The Angophora version is even more drastic, seemingly stripping all the recognisable elements of the track out and leaving behind a plaintive thread of ambient instrumentation.

In  just  a  year  of  existence,  Chloé’s  Lumière  Noire  has  brought  emerging  artists  and  promising  newcomers  together  –  and  this  first  compilation  of  13  brand  new  tracks  expands  the  roster,  exposing  the  label’s  eclectic  vision  in  full  daylight.  When  Chloé  talks  about  her  label,  she  puts  forward  the  fundamental  values  that  informed  her  own  musical  journey,  her  trust  in  her  own  musical  taste  –  and,  of  course,  the  predominance  of  human  relationships:  “I  followed  my  bliss  and  only  commissioned  tracks  from  artists  that  I  respect  and  whose  music  I  love.  That  to  me  is  Lumière  Noire’s  musical  palette.”With  this  13-track,  unmixed  compilation,  Chloé  makes  a  case  for  a  label  aesthetic  that  is  based  in  open-mindedness.  Familiar,  elemental  Lumière  Noire  artists  are  represented,  as  are  new  faces,  producing  a  kind  of  group  photo  presaging  what’s  next  for  the  fledgling  label.  Lyon’s  Markus  Gibb  leads  the  track  listing  with  Kuru  with  a  deep  chiaroscuro  matching  the  label’s  ethos,  followed  by  other  mainstays  Il  Est  Vilaine’s  Farenheit  451,  which  evokes  Ray  Bradbury’s  retro-dystopic  angst  with  the  band’s  usual  electro-pop  elegance. Elsewhere,  Suuns  lead  singer  Ben  Shemie,  who  lent  his  fascinating  art-rock  croon  to  Recall,  a  single  from  Chloé’s  Endless  Revisions  LP,  contributes  A  Million  Kinds,  a  synthy,  psych-pop  debut  that  is  as  brilliant  as  it  is  surprising.  On  to  the  freshman  class:  Dutch  producer  Drvg  Cvltvre  (who  gets  personal  kudos  from  Chloé  with  each  new  12”)  brings  the  uncompromising  dark  electro  of  his  hypnotic  and  claustrophobic  Last  Rites.  Jonathan  Fitoussi’s  airy,  minimalistic  Cercles  Polaires  brings  the  respite  of  his  recent  Versatile  Espaces  Timbrés  LP  (a  collaboration  with  Clemens  Hourrières):  “I  met  him  at  Xavier  Veilhan’s  Studio  Venezia  at  the  Venice  Biennale.  He’s  a  great  guy,  and  his  universe  is  unique,”  says  Chloé.  Benedikt  Frey’s  deep  techno  track  Iaon,  is  on  par  with  his  smash  2017  album,  Artificial,  out  on  ESP  Institute.    First-timers  are  also  part  of  the  recruits:  Bajram  Bili  with  the  ten  cerebral  minutes  of  Restart,  Théo  Muller  with  the  ultra-deep  Douce  Transe,  and  Lumi,  a  Basque  band  that  fuses  electronic  sounds  with  acoustic  instruments,  brings  the  compilation  to  a  close  with  a  track  commissioned  by  Chloé,  who  met  them  at  a  festival.  These  audacious  choices  are  anchored  down  with  the  likes  of  Permanent  Vacation  pioneer  Lauer’s  hooky,  80s-infused  Pythor  (“Just  like  him,  I  was  a  resident  of  the  Robert  Johnson,  and  he  was  a  guest  of  mine  at  one  of  my  Lumière  Noire  nights  at  the  Rex.  He  is  one  of  these  people  whose  music  I  highly  appreciate);  Aergeworc  &  Franck  Agrario,  half  of  English  duo  Swayzak  David  Brown’s  project,  weaves  an  ethno*  mood  into  Grace’s  techno.  Bringing  together  different  generations,  genres,  and  styles?  That  may  not  necessarily  be  Chloé’s  MO.  She  invokes  a  more  arbitrary,  personal  logic:  “I  like  to  mix  of-the-moment  tracks  and  more  timeless  one,  but  the  rule  is  above  all  ‘do  I  love  this  or  not?’.  That  was  my  ethos  when  I  started  Lumière  Noire.”  In  that  way,  the  label  is  definitely  in  keeping  with  its  time...

Some months ago, we started to work on our next EP and we decided to ask to the mighty @s3acontact to help us to pump it up. After 48h locked in his crazy studio, we finished 3 first tracks looking forward for the next teenagers session with him :)

Parfum d'Acid was the first edit we did before being warm enough to work on more tracks. We discovered this acid machine after maybe too many beers and Parfum d'Acid was alive.

At the beginning of summer there is again an update from Turn It Down Music. The track STRG + F5 comes from label owner BACK FOR GOOD (Matthias Speck). Remix support for this hard refresh comes from none other than Franz Scala (Francesco Scala), Slow Motion Records Label Head and half from Studio Luce. Both the original track and the Franz Scala remix are not stingy with gated reverb, so you feel set back directly to Marty MC Fly back in 1985. While the original track lives above all from its reduced overall appearance, a hypnotic pad and the spaced delay patterns, Franz Scala´s remix is more melodic and impresses with its rousing argeggio bass line.
