Inspiring the weird mechanic in 2013 and 2014. What made the machine dance!

I recently got my first instance of Notator for ATARI to use as a live jam MIDI looper. It just works as I´d expected. This track is nothing but a system operation verification :)

Notator in the loop

This is a one take live performance of a new track made entirely with DaveSmithInstruments Tempest analog drum machine. Recorded with Cockos Reaper in one take. Only slight compression and EQ added with MOTU Ultralite mk3 as well as a little bit of reverb. No other treatment was made. Just RAW Tempest sound. 
Also all sounds designed from scratch.

Ne-Tek - Some Madness For Your Ears (work in progress)

For this track I wanted to try using the Korg Volca Keys as a sequencer for my Juno-106. “How is that possible?!?,” you might ask. Well I’ll tell you how. I have modded the Volca Keys to include a MIDI out port. Using this mod I sent the MIDI out from the Volca Keys to the Juno-106. Both synths played the same sequence, but because the Volca Keys is polyphonic the Juno-106 consistently played chords, while I switched modes on the Volca Keys between poly, unison, and fifths, etc. I fleshed out the piece by adding an arp provided by the Bass Station II and a bass line from the Tempest.

There are only 8 and 16 step analog sequencer used.
The computer is only used for audio recording on one stereo track.

Drawing from Zen philosophy Cage appreciated sounds not as conveyors of ideas, but as things interesting in themselves. Said Morton Feldman, "The main influence from John Cage was a green light", a permission to expand the musical experience to include the ambient, the accidental and silence itself.

I used Mutable Instrument's Plaits for percussion and the Synthesis Technology E370 for all other sounds. A Xaoc envelope generator sequenced by a Makenoise Rene produces various random sonic curlicues, like stray thoughts that slowly disappear as a kind of clarity emerges.

I patched this up with my baby daughter strapped to my breast, sleeping. When I recorded the Rhodes parts, she sat next to me and banged the keys. My wife supplied the the countermelody in the middle. Its a family song.

To all the music I heard when I grew up I could picture the protagonists... a drummer at his set, someone with a guitar in his hand , a singer on the microphone.
When I heard the first electronic piece though, these images failed! All I could see was space, the moon, starfields. And I asked "What do you need to make music like that?" And they told me "...you need a synthesizer!"

...and eventually I got one...
