When Mad Zach’s Fortress EP hit way back in 2017 it was obvious that it would go on to become a genre classic. Two years on and the EP still feels like a missive from the future so what better project to close 2019 out with then a full-on remix project of the EP?

Enter heads like Dub Phizix, Chee, Hybris and Yunis all queuing up at Plasma Audio headquarters to try their own hand at flipping Mad Zach’s original bits. From slow-burning lurchers to strychnine-laced heaters, the remix EP is the perfect soundtrack for those long, dark nights of winter on the way.

The single Deep Breath presents producers in the position of hard and energetic Electronics. The hip-hop groove is complemented by dense bass lines, whose sound design draws from the genres of Bass Music and Drum and Bass. The drop is contrasted by the atmospheric intro together with the bridge supported by eastern percussion elements, adding a cinematic touch to the composition. All this is complemented by a rap sample - a deep-seated and modulated voice that turns into sharp and dynamic cramps. Malcuth & Facutum ~ Deep Breath [DistrictBass Premiere]

Shaolin uses the same methods as with Deep Breath, but adds emphasis on melodicity and epicness. He proudly admits, takes over, even directly builds on oriental motifs and musical instruments. Careful work with sampling, melodic hooks and a twisted atmospheric sound design lets the song stand out in itself. Here, Hip-Hop synergistically clashes with the sub-genres of Trap and the sharp elements coming from deeper waters of experimental electronic music.
