B-day buddy sunrise set

In Hour 2 our guest is DJ Vadim who first appeared on Solid Steel in 1996 back in the Kiss FM days and has featured regularly since. He steps up with a mix dedicated to his love of hip hop, reggae and dancehall, and for him 'they are like brother and sister, children of the same parents, same struggles and desires. Different in production, but share so many things in common'. It's another perfect mix for a hot day in London and features music from Yelloman, Roots Manuva, General Levy, Cutty Ranks and Top Cat, plus music from Vadim himself ahead of his new album Dubcatcher which is out on BBE next week.

This one is a selection of tunes in and around the border regions of footwork & jungle with elements of halftime, hip hop, IDM and some fresh new psychedelic bassy sounds. From moody, dark and heavy to melodic and cerebral, this mix reflects the range of emotions I usually attempt to move through in my live DJ sets. Featuring original tunes from local BC producers Taal Mala, Atyya, Goopsteppa, Self Evident and 5AM as well as a collection of some of my favourite international purveyors of the 80/170 BPM axis.

Philthkids performance 7:30-9:00 Friday evening featuring a Vogue showcase complete with proper dancing from 'House of la Douche'. "Linton Kwesi Johnson was born on 24 August 1952 in Chapelton, a small town in the rural parish of #Clarendon, Jamaica. He came to London in 1963, went to Tulse Hill secondary school and later studied Sociology at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London. Whilst still at school he joined the Black Panthers, helped to organise a poetry workshop within the movement and developed his work with #Rasta Love, a group of poets and drummers. In 1977 he was awarded a C Day Lewis Fellowship, becoming the writer-in-residence for the London Borough of Lambeth for that year. He went on to work as the Library Resources and Education Officer at the Keskidee Centre, the first home of Black theatre and art."

Happy Time Dancehall Explosion

This bad gyal has been a long-time staple in Vancouver's underground bass scene for more than two decades. She started out by spending countless hours digging elbow-deep in crates of 45s in Canada, the US and Jamaica. Her finely curated sets landed her behind the decks continuously and firmly solidified her as a member of Vancouver's notorious LIGHTA! crew. She is well-known for her legendary mixes, some being all-vinyl releases, her true love. Blending reggae/dancehall with dembow/bass/rap/RnB/grime, her musical repertoire is expansive and fresh. A regular at Bass Coast, she also graced stages at Shambhala, Diversity and her family-run festival The Field. She rocked the Thunder Stage at LIB and made ripples at the Moon Stage at the Oregon Eclipse. She has opened for well-known artists in both the reggae/dancehall and international underground music scenes and graces underground parties spanning the west coast and other major musical hubs. In 2012 she gave birth to Lighta's youngest little member. bup!bup!
