Sweden-based pianist and composer Leon den Engelsen debuts on piano and coffee records with Growth, a raw, warm, and intimate six-piece EP. On this project, the Dutch musician decorates his intimately recorded upright piano with delicate soundscapes, field-recordings and ambient synthesizers. Leon goes back to his roots in both improvisations and compositions on piano.

Leon came in touch with music early on when his mother practiced the piano at home. At the age of seven, Leon got his first lessons with the local piano teacher and his musical journey began. In his teens, Leon formed a band with his friends and only a few years later he’d start touring with national and international artists such as Iranian/Dutch singer and producer Sevdaliza, for whom he also does most of the piano and keyboard recording. In 2011, Leon moved to New Orleans to study jazz music and, in 2017, he finished a Master’s Degree at Codarts Conservatory in Rotterdam. One year later, Leon moved to Sweden where he built his recording studio in which he now writes and records his own music. In 2020, Leon released his debut EP Substance, a four-track project that connects the acoustic and electronic worlds through dance music.

Ouverture

This time for Daigo's rework of 'Seis' (originally written by Hiroko Murakami), he recorded the track through his newly modified DIY preamps and a pair of echo machines.

The space and the timing between each notes are carefully calculated and played while the echoed sounds are generated somewhat unintentionally with the tape flutters, this track gives its listeners a whole new experience and perceptions of the instrument and also gives the glimpse of Daigo's musical world.

With the occasion of the re-release of his original score for the theatrical play "Zyklon", Manos Milonakis finds himself in Kópavogur, Iceland and together with violinist Björk Óskarsdóttir they record an outdoor live version of the "La Forza del Destino", based on the original theme by Giuseppe Verdi.

Single to be included in "Zyklon" OST, coming out later in 2023.

"Science philosopher Karl Popper put forth the idea that the world could be divided into two categories: clocks and clouds. Clocks are fixed, orderly systems that can be understood by reducing them to their simplest parts. Clouds are, however an 'epistemic mess...' that are 'highly irregular, disorderly, and more or less unpredictable.' This adage was used to illustrate the dilemma of both science (and, I think in daily life) to approach all things as though they were clocks. We want to give nature (and people) a blueprint. But this approach is destined to bring nothing but frustration. The cosmos, its phenomenon, and people are much more like clouds than clocks."

Sometimes I can't tell if my mood is driving the music I'm playing, or if the music is influencing my mood. I think it's a little of both. But this Saturday morning, I'm waking up to another gentle day. The city is peaceful just behind my curtains, like a frozen postcard from a moment stuck in time. Only the clouds seem to move, announcing the passage of hours. I turn back to music, to feel something 'changing', and with it, emotions, perceptions and senses are all that I know that are signs of my 'life'. Today's soundtrack to the imaginary narrative is a piece by Richard Luke appropriately titled "Silent Story". This track originally appeared on Luke's 2019 release on Moderna titled Glass Island, and today we are honoured with a rework, this time accompanied by short thumping bass, and gorgeous string passages courtesy of Amira Bedrush-McDonald. This piece is taken from an upcoming EP, featuring additional reworks by Daigo Hanada, Aisling Brouwer, Jakob Lindhagen, Halftribe and Anna Pluto. I hope that it starts off your quiet May weekend, as it has revealed all that's real in mine.
