Ponchmann - Allies And Enemy Feat. Sandro Palazzo, Jose Arzurmendi (Marie Wilhelmine Anders Remix)

For this album, photographs by Thomas Lutz illustrate a narrative that is recounted with my music. A person - let’s call them „She“ - who leaves her parent’s house to lead an independent life. But then for whatever circumstances, she faces the danger of homelessness.

„She’s Leaving“, the title track, is inspired by an experience at age 17, when I left my parent’s house and carried a box of my things on foot to my new home. On my 38th birthday - the day my grandmother died - I wrote this piano piece.

„Variation I“ features a modified piano with sound built in the granular synthesizer. In „Variation II“ and „III“ this process is continued with addition of instruments and spatial effects.

„Night Tube“ is both a further variation and a reminiscence of „Waking the Witch“ by Kate Bush. Taken from the second side of her „Hounds Of Love“ LP, the concept piece „The Ninth Wave“ tells the story of a girl floating alone on the sea in a life raft. Voices of her family in her fantasy awaken her again and again, saving her from falling asleep, freezing to death and drowning.
In „Night Tube“ I think of a homeless person who nods off in the London subway at night and is startled, again and again, by inner and outer voices. In the metaphorical sense, it’s also about being scared awake in one’s own circumstances. There are currently an estimated 59,000 homeless women in Germany.

„Without A Sound“ closes the album. With this remix of the piano piece „She’s Leaving“ I tried to capture some of the emptiness and quiet vastness of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music („async“). The trumpet samples come from a nocturnal jam session in the recording studio of the Stuttgart Musikhochschule in which I was involved.

With the additional „Threads of Reflections“ remix*, Belial Pelegrim contributes a unique cinematic soundscape with a generous and gentle atmosphere.

Marie Wilhelmine Anders’ new, multi-genre concept album “Frozen Music” follows up on her albums “Travels” (Broque) and “She’s Leaving” (Noisy Meditation). Being her fifth album, which refers to the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson, "Frozen Music" also evolves around another main source if inspiration that is drum ’n’ bass: Sunchase (who mastered „Frozen Music“ superbly), dBridge, Calibre, Krust, Goldie (Mother!), Optical, T.Power, LTJ Bukem, Banaczech, are just a few of her main influences. While searching for the connecting elements between the poem template from the late 19th century and the time when d’n’b was created 100 years later, she found the sound of the foghorn, invented in the year Stevenson was born. The foghorn was first installed in Jamaican sound systems in the 1950s, and it created an unexpected power in the bass range, and from there found its way into the raves and d’n’b productions of the children of the "Windrush" generation in the UK. The second connecting element Marie found was the music of Claude Debussy: his "liquid works" (David Toop) - influenced by the music of Java, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan - in turn influenced the later generation of ambient music producers. The chord progressions from his "Prelude" from "Pour Le Piano" reappear in a stretched and filtered form in Marie’s ambient intro track "Prelude" and in a few other places in "Frozen Music“. The nine tracks of "Frozen Music" find their very own form in the atmospheric recreation of the pictorial language of Stevenson's poem "Evensong" and in its relationship to some of the most fascinating genres in electronic music. Being a classically trained composer Marie juxtaposes ambient, breaks, d’n’b and techno. She approaches the boundaries of genres with a kind of innocence, always listening to the connections between the different styles. In “Frozen Music” she picks up on these connections. This works so well because the musical forms often don't adhere to what you would deem traditional structure. My entry for The Allegorist-Desired Changes-Remix Competition on Metapop 2021. Since Metapop is closing end of April 2023, I upload my remix here.

My text on Metapop:
"It was a lot of fun. Thank you very much for your great tracks and this great opportunity, Anna! 
It quickly became clear to me what it was going to be: picking up on the groove part of the second part with the aim of making it really take off.
To start with, I took 2 tones from the "weird vocals", built a loop out of them and sometimes added additional harmony tones. I proceeded in a similar way with the noise track: removed a small part, looped and sidechained against the kick so that it breathes and pulsates. Conga track also taken a little and transformed into a new loop.
For the bass I took over the four-note descending bass line, stretched it twice and added a secondary note to the last note. The rest was done by itself: the phenomenal vocals (3voices) float above my straight beat at 130 bpm. The I added in-house acid line, own lead sounds, a small ascending piano motif - that's about it :)"

A few words to the complete mix version: The two tracks, which I had chosen as intro and outro to my otherwise more toe-tapping drum & bass mix, not only provide the framework for the mix, but also give it its name and, I hope, make it feel like a story told with music.
Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner had worked in a project with homeless youths in London and published a photo and music project with them called "Night Jam". In their lyrics, which I found very touching, the young MCs tell of their experiences and feelings on the streets at night.

The rest of the mix - hopefully - speaks for itself. Sometimes I took the liberty of layering tracks - exclusively - on top of each other: the two minimalist tracks by Mark System - The Earth and Body Model - Test Pilot offered themselves, as to my ears the newcomer duo Body Pilot have let themselves be inspired by System. Or ASC - Starkwood + DJ Zinc - Hear No Evil. As a third and fourth layer - at some points simultaneously - Paradox - Toprock and Deba & Paradox - Swirl.

RLS expresses in his poem "Keepsake Mill" a somewhat transfigured view of the adult on his own childhood. I've shortened the text for my musical adaption to open it up to a memory that you do not know if you'll ever escape. This "marvelous place" is truly a lonely, empty and cold place.

Rose and I saw in the night

Were dearer to me than bread.

Night after night in my sorrow
The stars stood over the sea,
Till lo! I looked in the dusk
And a star had come down to me.

The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) also set the poem that this is all about to music for his song cycle "Songs Of Travel" (named after the posthumous poetry collection of the same name by R.L.Stevenson) I quote, right at the beginning of my track, his piano introduction to build a bridge from his music and his time to our music and our time.

Following on "Andersworld" and its remixes, Marie Wilhelmine Anders dedicates her new album "Travels" to her distinctive mixture of storytelling as well as virtuosic use of vocals and instruments and pours all of it into a highly atmospheric club sound. While Marie continues the themes of her previous releases, with Robert Louis Stevenson’s poetry being a strong and omnipresent influence once again, the epic tracks on "Travels" deviate in several ways from the previous album.

Right at the surface, one is immediately caught by the ubiquitous 4/4 bass drum, which lends the album its distinctly club-compatible character, that is supported equally by a deep and atmospheric production, which is carried by melodic chords and Marie's trademark vocals. Marie’s narratives are inspired by Thomas Lutz' photographs and process topics such as travel, movement and change, and are given ample time to unfold.

While "Andersworld" was bubbling over with ideas, which came together in quick succession, the four epic pieces on "Travels" develop their individual ideas into unique mini-dramas over 9-12 minutes each. This is far from creating a vacuum but creates ample space for a dense atmosphere, depth and a subtle play with various influences. That way, a track can evolve from a dubby balearic ambient piece into an emotional and energetic trance track, as "The Infinite Shining Heavens" impressively demonstrates.

"Travels" is at the same time a consistent continuation of Marie's oeuvre as well as a departure onto new territory, which raises hopes to be able to listen to Marie's tracks on the dancefloor sometime soon.

MARIE WILHELMINE ANDERS is a wanderer in music. Musically and instrumentally trained since her earliest childhood, she received her first technical training as a sound engineer at GDR television. She played keyboards in a punk band in the East Berlin underground music scene, created field recordings and sound installations, studied classical composition at the University Of The Arts Berlin, and graduated as a music teacher at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart. In Stuttgart she was an active part of the experimental improvisational scene playing piano as well as a set of electronics. There she founded two ensembles, "Unterton" and "Hammerhaus", both of which brought together groove and free-flowing improvised forms from different perspectives. Additionally, she initiated and directed “momentmusik"—a concert series for experimental and improvised music, visual arts, performance and spoken word, which established the connection between her ensembles and the national and international scenes. 

In 2005 she ended her concert activity and moved back to Berlin. Eager for new forms of expression, Marie learned to play the electric bass, and began producing her music using Cubase and publishing it under the pseudonym Marie Wilhelmine Anders. After discovering the poems of the Scottish poet, Robert Louis Stevenson, she began to develop her new electronic musical language incorporating and building upon his verses. Marie's conceptual thinking and her craft as a modern classical composer allow her to congenially translate his lyrics into a modern electronic language, influenced by techno, electronica and ambient music. Between 2018 and 2021 she released 4 albums which built upon each other and referred to Stevenson’s work (including a remix album of her tracks), and more will follow. As a producer, Marie likes to work alone and independently. She is also increasingly in demand as a remixer.

Her best friend writes: "Marie works her way out of all restrictions and experiments with styles and musical directions.Thereby she adapts formal means and creates something very much her own out of it. As always, I am impressed by her accuracy in everything she does. Marie is the secret Phoenix among my friends, who every time after it has turned to ashes, puts on a new and even more splendid plumage. I have great admiration for her consistency, uncompromising artistry, unconditional honesty, absolute fidelity and loyalty. One speaks of the Phoenix as an eternally youthful bird. And he can fly.”
