Black Merlin - Kosua [IOTG-005]

Back in 2015 George Thompson AKA Black Merlin started a deep love affair with the remote island of Papua New Guinea. After his first album ‘Hipnotik Tradisi’, released on Island Of The Gods; George was intrigued to find a place drenched in culture and untouched by the western world.

In 2016 George planned his first solo expedition, venturing out to meet the Kosua Tribe. Over the course of the next two years George would record the sounds of the Kosua people. From their daily lives, ancient dance customs and wildlife. During one of these trips he spent 14 days alone in the jungle, getting in and out of the Mount Bosavi crater and further 3 days inside recording and filming his experience. These recordings and experiences formed the basis of his second album, Kosua.

Brothers of young bucks run through the forest of the mountain and play together.  They are still kids, but look just like grown-up deers.  They run through the trees, along the river, behind the waterfall and over the rocks.

Masayoshi Fujita is a Japanese vibraphonist and composer based in Berlin. Masayoshi first learned how to play the drums, followed by extensive vibraphone training to craft and play his own compositions.

Determined not to stick to traditional vibraphone styles or techniques and theory of composition, he seeks his own sound of vibraphone and new possibility of it. Masayoshi also prepares his instrument with strings of bead, strips of foil and similar objects. The resulting new sounds, akin to distortions, help to expand the vibraphone spectrum without eroding the instrument’s intrinsic character or even abandoning it altogether.

Inspired by the silence and deepness of the fog, the mountains and the gravity within, His music evokes images, atmospheres, sceneries and stories in the listener, the images that have accumulated in himself. At the same time he explores the unexplored beauty of the vibraphone, and pursues the charm of the instrumentation 
and the music itself.

Under his electronic solo project alias, el fog, Masayoshi combines the vibraphone and analogue/digital electronic sound and textured noises using divers experimental methods.

His recent collaboration with German electronic musician Jan Jelinek received a lot of attention from experimental music fans around the world
