This Place

Written and recorded over 2 days in South East London, ‘Carried’ is a collaborative EP from violinist Fiona Brice, cellist Tony Woollard and composer/producer Jim Perkins. The project began as an antidote to the sometimes laborious academic tradition of composing, scoring, revising, rehearsing, recording, editing and producing music. 

Each piece was created without score or prior preparation, relying on instinct, discussion and collaboration, with a focus on capturing the energy and essence of an idea whilst it is still fresh. 

The result is a suite of 5 emotive, meditative and distinctive pieces combining drones, elements of minimalism and chamber music with textured harmonics and the occasional melodic line. ‘Carried’ honours the spontaneity and spark of a new idea and nurtures it, creating a deeply engaging and cinematic sound.

2020 was a very tough year for all of us around the world. Covid 19 has affected nearly everyone on the planet. With this in mind, I sat at the piano and improvised this emotional piece of music. It almost felt like the music was an extension of my feelings.

Looking Ahead

The melodic and rhythmic motifs are the product of improvisations where spirits are invited. They utter their cries from the underworld and whisper melancholy tales to the ears of living beings.
