Unfortunately, a live recording on the night itself was not possible. As a memento to this absolutely incredible night, this upload is a live recording (from memory and at the same tempo) of the set that I played, recorded from my home studio on the evening of Sunday 15th December.

ZoukOut is an annual dance music festival held in Singapore since 2000. One of Asia's biggest music dance festivals, it is organised by Zouk (club) Singapore. DJs that have performed at ZoukOut include Paul Van Dyk, 2ManyDJS, Masters at Work, Gilles Peterson, Richie Hawtin, Sven Väth, Peter Kruder, James Lavelle, Armin Van Buuren and Stereo MCs. In 2013, ZoukOut attracted its largest audience ever, and was attended by 41,000 people.

James Dean Brown - Get Perlonized (In the Zone)

James Dean Brown + Helena Hauff – Provocative Percussion (1x TR-707, 3x TR-808)

Driven by the common DIY-attitude, James Dean Brown founded Hypnobeat with Pietro Insipido in 1983. Making noise with a Boss DR-55 rhythm machine, 2nd hand gear and household utensils, it was not before JDB’s encounter with Victor Sol and Tobias Freund a year later that Hypnobeat became a proper, fully electronic outfit.

The main goal was to follow a "neo-tribal" approach by reducing electronics to the hypnotic rhythm core. Affected by the emotional impact of polyrhythmic energy, the collective's live sets were often based on machine improvisations. In the studio, machine expert Victor Sol was the one who shifted the Hypnobeat sound to the desired level of technological sophistication.

Apart from a TB-303, the wide range of analog studio/live gear included up to six synchronized rhythm machines – always with a focus on the inimitable sound of the Roland TR-808. Accordingly, Hypnobeat conceived an early form of contemporary club music, somewhere within the scope of classical Electro Funk and prototype Techno, and with a proto-Acid flavour – on "the front-line of sonic innovation before Techno was even a thing."

In 1996, evolving from Hypnobeat, James Dean Brown formed Narcotic Syntax, a project he boosted together with Yapacc in 2003, with releases on Perlon, WIR and Prospector.

And after all, Hypnobeat retransformed from Narcotic Syntax. What was supposed to be a one-off solo live appearance by James Dean Brown at Serendip Festival, Paris in 2012 became the exciting new evolution of Hypnobeat with Helena Hauff joining the project a year later.

The duo's live performances are completely based on improvisation, exhausting the power of an untamed Roland horde which is unique on stage: 1 x TR-707 + 3 x TR-808 + 2x TB-303 + a formidable array of effects = provocative percussion, voodoo passion, tribal ecstasy, hypnodelic temptation, psycho-exotic magic, universal resonance, and a quantum of danger under a crypto-bohemian approach.

"At W Bali we continue our on-going support of the burgeoning local scene through our latest concept, Foundation. Having most recently given the current crop of Indonesian DJ’s a platform to show how good they really are, we have now extended this concept out to the wider region with a slight twist, as we handpick the finest and most talented resident DJ’s across the whole of Asia from some of the most recognised clubs and venues in the region. 

Resident DJ’s are the unsung heroes of clubland, they are the ones who are trusted to read and excite the crowd at either end of the night, and ensure the night is a textured experience taking everyone on a musical journey. Often the best of these are critically acclaimed by the headline acts despite not taking the glory, so we felt it is only right we give them the chance to showcase themselves and prove that The Foundation is what everything else is built on!

Born in Singapore to a family of musicians and lovers of jazz and classical music, from a young age Maurice developed a curiosity for musical forms that stir the senses and tell a story. His time spent in London as a promoter for Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly Records kick-started his journey as a DJ more than 10 years ago. 

Over the years Maurice has quietly established himself in Singapore's underground music scene and around South-East Asia through his very own Re:fuge club nights in Singapore, festival appearances at Epizode (Vietnam), Wonderfruit and Karma Kastle (Thailand) and performances alongside some of the world's leading House & Techno names including Dixon, Mano Le Tough, Kristian Beyer (Âme), Roman Flügel, Ata, Marcus Worgull, The Drifter, Fort Romeau, Aera, Matthias Schöber, Love Over Entropy and &ME. 

Armed with a sound that marries deep and melodic house with tough and moody techno, Maurice is a believer that electronic music is an open platform, without limits on who or what it may connect to.
