SOUTH AFRICAN EVOLUTION

This mix charts the evolution of South African electronic music from the 1980's to the present day. South African producers began experimenting with electronic sounds in the 1980s and it became a feature of the 'Bubblegum' era of South African pop music (tracks by Splash/Chicco/The Bees included here). By the 1990s a new breed of dance music emerged, broadly known as 'Kwaito' which fused house rhythms with hip-hop-style vocals (tracks here by Peta Theanet/Professor Rhythm/Spikiri/Alaska). South African House music continues to be hugely popular today and is typified by off-beat drums, spacious sound-scapes and soaring vocals (tracks here by Heavy-K/Mpumi/TNS)

.. created, performed and recorded by The Tins, 1979 - 1980, in June's Garage Bankview Calgary AB CA, [Brian Knox McGugan (then Brian McGugan), Jason Thompson, Kim Sturdy] by simply re-recording back & forth between 2 cassette recorders, each time adding more music or effects. Gear included: Simple drum kit, Kay Guitar, Ibanez bass and cheap microphone, Garnet Session-man amp, fuzz/wah pedal, and a variety of electronic connections and variations. There's even a pinging rhythmical sound created with drumstick tapping an old teacup wth reverb.
