Navigating familiar Progressive House waters with confidence and purpose, GMJ & Matter’s Meanwhile imprint showcases six tracks from outstanding talents within the underground dance scene as they come together to explore “Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 1”

First up, label head-honcho, GMJ, joins forces with fellow countryman and newly crowned Meanwhile resident, amháin. Through “Flux” the duo charts a familiar course through the progressive landscape with heavy beat and glorious rolling rhythm. Easing elegantly into its stride, a heavy bass groove plays its part as flowing pads and myriad spot effects tumble over each other to create a rich sonic blend. Subtle motifs add a textured layer post-breakdown in an impressive collaborative debut. Having already showcased his talent via the “Horizonz / Push Thru” EP, Imran Khan returns with the beautiful “Patterns of Loss”. Full of emotion and production flair, a familiar heavy kick and driving percussive cadence lay the foundations for an array of melodic strata to sit atop before a mesmerising arpeggio sparkles across the breakdown. Returning to its heavy rhythmic character in the second half, Imran Khan has created another 24-carat jewel.

A regular on Mango Alley in recent months, Forty Cats makes her Meanwhile debut with the hypnotic “Therapy”. Through a glittering array of white-noise effects and stereo-panned arpeggiated phrasing, the Russian artist combines a shimmering sonic palette that filters its way across 7-minutes. Waxing and waning with ease, a standout motif also appears at intermittent intervals to create a familiar aural echo on which to pin Forty Cats’ production prowess. Remixing GMJ’s “Mood Medicine” in June 2021, Paul Kardos returns with the dynamic and elegant “The Producella”. Immediately striking with its aural melange, a hefty kick transforms proceedings as an acetylene-edged lead cuts through shuffling percussive hats. Evolving powerfully, a counterpoint glissando melody provides a subtle shift in emphasis in the second half as Kardos creates a real head-turning track full of meticulous detail and technique.

Fresh from the success of “Deeper Dye”, another returning artist sees Paul Deep hit the heights with “Milo”. Full of trademark production credentials, a beautiful flowing melody ripples across the track, filtering in and out with ease while a metronomic kick and off-beat snare create rhythmic precision. Through a heady combination of rhythm and melody, Paul Deep has provided another seismic creation. The Indian continent is represented through the growing force of Weird Sounding Dude. Making his Meanwhile debut, “Wonderlife” is a charismatic offering that revels in layers of counterpoint arpeggio sequences that propels the track forward. Immaculately syncopated to the dynamic rhythmic foundation, the breakdown is a pause for new, dramatic melodies to come to the fore in inspiring fashion, before the rhythm and arpeggiated foundations drop back in.

“Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 1” provides an opportunity for a new voyage of discovery as artists from across the continents come together uniting in common musical purpose.

Beloved for his combination of musicality and groove, Deeparture debuts on Clubsonica Records with 'Propellor | Rolls Royce'. Dominique Vijverberg, better known as Deeparture, is an electronic music producer from The Netherlands. His penchant for crafting melodic house and progressive minded sounds has earned praise from the underground's premiere tastemakers. Eelke Kleijn, Joris Voorn, Lane 8 and Hernan Cattaneo have all chimed in with play and support for Deeparture's transcendent sound, which has found a home on the genre's elite imprints such as Anjunabeats, Days Like Nights and This Never Happened. Also, an accomplished DJ, the Utrecht resident has programmed music for his country's trendiest venues, alongside top tier talents such as Guy J, Einmusik and Tinlicker. Now embarking on yet another high-profile project, Deeparture debuts on Clubsonica Records with a two-track showcase alongside a remix from GMJ.

Destined to be a highlight in Deeparture's meticulous discography, it is the melodic stylings of the title selection which get the release underway. Rhythmically charged from the outset, it's undulating cadence, striking vocal phrases and character rich groove set the piece on a course for aural enlightenment. Emotive chord changes and dynamic stabs rise across the first act, carrying momentum and mood into the main break. Pitch bending effects delight across the centrepiece, eventually melting down to the creation's symphonic motifs and esoteric moods, as a timely drum roll and rising sonics unite for a tasteful crescendo and balmy finale.

The lone interpretation of 'Propellor' is provided by GMJ who makes his label debut. Based in Melbourne, Australia GMJ aka Gavin Griffin has been a primary figure in the progressive house scene for over a decade. His passion for deep and emotive electronic music has seen him land releases on the industry's most esteemed imprints. From Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music to Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, UK behemoth Anjunadeep and his own meanwhile imprint, it's GMJ's storytelling style that continues to surprise and inspire even the genre's most discerning fans. Now following his latest Proton Music vehicle 'Rise Above', the Melbourne resident debuts on a Clubsonica with a thrilling take on 'Propellor'. Adding more of a progressive state of mind, the Aussie artist carves out a dynamic groove adorned with firing percussive, enlightening vocal fragments and fresh rhythmic themes. Hypnotic arps emerge as the first movement takes shapes, adding a meditative quality to its dance floor inspired framework. Coming to full fruition during the main break, the kaleidoscopic theme opens up, rising triumphantly towards a classy crescendo and smooth yet exhilarating final act.

Adding further depth to the release is the second and final original 'Rolls Royce'. Beginning with beautifully contoured bass lines and neatly manicured percussion, it's deeper design delights as the groove gets filled in and harmonic layers descend over the framework. Glassy arps and glowing effects flow through subtle modulation, as orchestral sonics and ghostly wails steal the air leading into the main break. Complete with reflective qualities, the centrepiece sits as the most emotive moment on the release, effortlessly transferring its heartfelt vibe to the dance floor and rounding the EP out on a strong note. An immaculate sounding release from Deeparture once again, who makes his Clubsonica Records debut in fine style here.

Opening a new chapter in an already leading best-seller, GMJ & Matter launch a companion label to sit alongside their peerless Meanwhile imprint. Through Meanwhile Horizons, the Australian duo are set to focus on a more melodic and considered dancefloor sound with a liberal smattering of downtempo and chillout music.

A debut release sees a stunning quartet of artists take centre stage on “Beyond the Horizon”. Opening the EP, Maddy Hughes once again takes his renowned and revered Funkform moniker into the limelight with “Cosmosis”. Beautifully imagined, delicate textures and sonic waves wash over each other in delicious harmony as subtle motifs emerge out the aural collage. Building in delicate intensity, a chunky beat and airy percussive groove sit atop the 9-minute piece as the second half opens up with glittering arpeggio and an immaculate wall of sound.

Co-label founder, Matter, once again delivers another stunning performance with “Air Sand”, the first single from his forthcoming debut album on Meanwhile Horizons. A veteran of countless high-profile releases on the likes of Anjunadeep, Balance and Proton Music, the Australian provides a powerful backdrop of thumping beat and ticking percussive overlay as a rolling groove creates the foundation for an evolving array of sounds to blossom in the 10-minute sonic excursion. Always keeping the dancefloor in mind, a club-friendly middle section is a progressive house masterclass of layered melodies, vocal breaths and hypnotic plucked motif. Sandwiched either side by waves of atmosphere and texture, “Air Sand” is another Matter gem.

A stalwart of the progressive house scene for 8 years, Rafa’EL is another artist with a rich seam of high-profile releases to his name for the likes of Balkan Connection, Univack and Electronic Tree. Now making his mark on Meanwhile Horizons, “Julie” is a fluid, progressive house jewel that glitters through use of sparkling arpeggio and sumptuous free-flowing pads. The most recognisable club-friendly track of the EP, a strong rhythmic framework anchors the track while synthesised vocal sounds pitch delicately against layers of counterpoint motifs to create a spell-binding debut.

Debuting his new ambient and downtempo soubriquet, Meanwhile supremo, GMJ presents Qiam on the final track of the release. Already an iconic name within the underground dance fraternity with scores of best-selling releases on blue-chip imprints, “Dadradah” is a gloriously imagined track brim full of emotion and atmosphere. Within a beatless structure, thickly textured pads dominate as an emotionally charged bassline sustains throughout. Building to a spine-tingling crescendo over its 6-minute duration, a filtered arpeggio sequence opens up as delicate string motifs had further intensity in the final stages.

Stretching out into a golden dawn, “Beyond the Horizon” showcases an increasingly bright new future.
