Navigating familiar Progressive House waters with confidence and purpose, GMJ & Matter’s Meanwhile imprint showcases six tracks from outstanding talents within the underground dance scene as they come together to explore “Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 1”

First up, label head-honcho, GMJ, joins forces with fellow countryman and newly crowned Meanwhile resident, amháin. Through “Flux” the duo charts a familiar course through the progressive landscape with heavy beat and glorious rolling rhythm. Easing elegantly into its stride, a heavy bass groove plays its part as flowing pads and myriad spot effects tumble over each other to create a rich sonic blend. Subtle motifs add a textured layer post-breakdown in an impressive collaborative debut. Having already showcased his talent via the “Horizonz / Push Thru” EP, Imran Khan returns with the beautiful “Patterns of Loss”. Full of emotion and production flair, a familiar heavy kick and driving percussive cadence lay the foundations for an array of melodic strata to sit atop before a mesmerising arpeggio sparkles across the breakdown. Returning to its heavy rhythmic character in the second half, Imran Khan has created another 24-carat jewel.

A regular on Mango Alley in recent months, Forty Cats makes her Meanwhile debut with the hypnotic “Therapy”. Through a glittering array of white-noise effects and stereo-panned arpeggiated phrasing, the Russian artist combines a shimmering sonic palette that filters its way across 7-minutes. Waxing and waning with ease, a standout motif also appears at intermittent intervals to create a familiar aural echo on which to pin Forty Cats’ production prowess. Remixing GMJ’s “Mood Medicine” in June 2021, Paul Kardos returns with the dynamic and elegant “The Producella”. Immediately striking with its aural melange, a hefty kick transforms proceedings as an acetylene-edged lead cuts through shuffling percussive hats. Evolving powerfully, a counterpoint glissando melody provides a subtle shift in emphasis in the second half as Kardos creates a real head-turning track full of meticulous detail and technique.

Fresh from the success of “Deeper Dye”, another returning artist sees Paul Deep hit the heights with “Milo”. Full of trademark production credentials, a beautiful flowing melody ripples across the track, filtering in and out with ease while a metronomic kick and off-beat snare create rhythmic precision. Through a heady combination of rhythm and melody, Paul Deep has provided another seismic creation. The Indian continent is represented through the growing force of Weird Sounding Dude. Making his Meanwhile debut, “Wonderlife” is a charismatic offering that revels in layers of counterpoint arpeggio sequences that propels the track forward. Immaculately syncopated to the dynamic rhythmic foundation, the breakdown is a pause for new, dramatic melodies to come to the fore in inspiring fashion, before the rhythm and arpeggiated foundations drop back in.

“Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 1” provides an opportunity for a new voyage of discovery as artists from across the continents come together uniting in common musical purpose.

With the remix edition of MUUI's 'Relevant Symmetry' we welcome back label favorites Mononoid and D-Nox in collaboration with Ed Steele to ICONYC. 

D-Nox & Ed Steele open proceedings with their rendition of 'Relevant Symmetry'. D-Nox who needs no introduction, has been gracing the top labels of the world with his work for years, with his partner in crime Beckers. For the remix of 'Relevant Symmetry' he teamed up with Ed Steele, who has seen a steady rise to the top with his outstanding productions. 

The duo created a rework full of tension from the word go, as the atmospheric vibe subtly keeps you moving with warm tinkling sounds, a smooth edge and some nicely effected sounding pieces. We basically have the formula for a bit of a monumental outing. The sparseness is the key here, as their restrained gem works its magic while it plays away, creating a warm glow, creating an air of sophistication. "Essential stuff!"

Next up we have a remix from label all-stars Mononoid, known for their polished driving sound, keep the ethereal theme of the original alive, as the pulsating bass powers along, before its drum fills and general warmth all combine to do the talking. Like something from yesteryear, yet sounding fresh – Their transcendent touch up adds controlled calmness, but increases the groove with stripped back and lucid elements at the same time, before the luscious pads grace the rework changing the vibe and creating a blanket of warmth that wraps around the effected groove.

With the remix edition of 'Relevant Symmetry' MUUI once again proves that the enigmatic producer knows no boundaries, as this beautiful melodic gem guides you to a full-on club laden, melodic hug of a release that will cause many smile induced moments and lift the gloomy mood that many of us are experiencing. Blended by many years of club nights as a DJ and alternative late-night music listening at home, wasP (was Paul McCarthy / Mac) is an artistic expression which sets to capture an individualized style established by the deeper & more melancholic grooves of the electronic genre.

The first single “Laid Bare” was born out of desire to write a song which connected to a vulnerable state and is sung by his cousin, the inimitably talented Deaf Joe. Recorded during lockdown in a makeshift home studio, Deaf Joe’s atmospheric vocals provided extra significance to the lyrics whilst buttressing the gradual build of energy throughout the track.

Continuing their ascent through the organic house underground, Mariner + Domingo return to Madloch’s Sound Avenue with a new three track showcase. The Belgian imprint has become somewhat of a home base for the talented American duo. A cross section of Mariner + Domingo’s most beloved tracks have come courtesy of the long-standing imprint, most notably ‘Le’ Carnival’, ‘Edenwilde’ and ‘Another Life’, the latter of which earned play, support and a Beatport chart feature from world class DJ and All Day I Dream boss Lee Burridge. Now as the world looks towards a period of rejuvenation, with dancefloors taking on new levels of satisfaction after an extended silence, Mariner + Domingo charm us once again with three stunning tracks across their latest Sound Avenue vehicle ‘Inertia’.

Already a favourite of organic house trendsetter Tim Green, it is the esoteric sounds of the title selection which lead the release off. Mariner + Domingo continue to perfect their craft here, with an amalgamation of carnival inspired motifs blanketing a rich, well contoured groove and flurries of exotic percussion. Void of any traditional musicality, it’s mystical charm might be its strongest suit. Coming to an emotional peak during the interlude, the Florida residents marry indistinct vocals with breezy effects, hopeful pads and harmonic swells for an understated yet poignant peak. 

Going deeper still are the charming sounds of selection two ‘I Still Remember’. Set in motion by a lush, DJ friendly intro, Mariner + Domingo open emotional centres further with fragmented vocals and Mediterranean musicality. A thumping foundation sets the pace going forward, delighting hearts and minds with its utopian flavour, as wistful melodies ebb and flow with the main break drawing closer. Colourful pads and processed pianos rise in unison across the interlude, offering a romantic lean and conjuring up transcendent imagery for all the deep dreamers out there. Essential eyes closed material for your living room or dance floor. 

Rounding out the release are the lush qualities of ‘How Am I Supposed To Feel’. Thoughtful vocal phrasing and organic percussion sit perfectly over punchy beats and pulsating bass tones. The duo’s drifting harmonics are beautifully interwoven, creating a vivid soundscape and magical transition into a second act of broken beats and vibrant percussion. A unique and impactful transition which ultimately spearheads further vocal edits and a delicate piano infused outro. It caps off another sensational audio travelogue from Mariner + Domingo, a fast-rising duo who always seem to put their best foot forward on Sound Avenue.

After remixing GMJ & Matter’s “Lost on Origin” in late 2020, Imran Khan returned to Meanwhile with a full EP debut in February 2021. Returning to the stellar release, two new remixes come from Argentinean and Greek stars.

A legendary figure in the underground house fraternity, Juan Deminicis has consistently been at the cutting edge of the movement with a distinctive and innovative sound that has seen him grace such iconic imprints as Pablo Bolivar’s Seven Villas, Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Guy J’s Lost & Found. Now making his Meanwhile debut, the Juan Deminicis remix of “Horizonz” is a compelling rework that dazzles with trademark rhythmic flair and sumptuous melodic arrangement. Layers of sound cascade over each other in intelligent fashion as the cadence of the original is enhanced with a dynamic vibrancy from sparkling hi-hats. Sumptuous pads and reverb-coated synth lines ripple across proceedings with ease as the subtle motifs of Khan’s work are complemented further by Deminicis’ stunning artistry.

Another iconic figure to feature heavily within the progressive house movement, Simos Tagias has been a watchword for high-quality production work that has been at the heart of a plethora of blue-chip labels after early work for Lynx Records in late 2012. Since then, some 400 production credits have featured heavily for the likes of Roger Martinez’s Higher States, Aly & Fila’s FSOE and the evergreen Proton Music. March 2021’s “Euphoria / Emotion” EP showcased the Greek producer’s talents on Meanwhile as he now returns with a blistering reworking of “Horizonz” that carries all the hallmarks of an artist at the height of his powers. Pitched arpeggios rise and fall with ease as subtle melodic layers criss-cross in imperceptible patterns, creating new harmonies and pulsating waves of sound. Reaching a rousing crescendo, a hypnotic new motif appears in the second half to mesmeric effect as Tagias extends Imran Khan’s work into a stunning new direction.

'Pole Folder, Aethon & Jinadu join Labyrinth with ‘The Great Beyond’. Remix support comes from Fur Coat and Armonica.

Belgian electronic pioneer, Pole Folder needs little introduction. A former protégée of the UK legend and Bedrock boss, John Digweed, Pole Folder broke onto the scene in 2001 and has since evolved into a multi-instrumentalist and live performer showcasing an exciting and unique brand of melodic house and techno. Signed to Global Underground, Renaissance and the aforementioned bedrock, Pole Folder exudes a timeless class in everything he makes.

Munich-based Aethon is the Deep-House/Ethereal-Techno alias of DJ/Producer and Modular Synth enthusiast Christian Schnall. Socialised and influenced by the alternative music of the ‘90s, he combines the melancholic teen spirit with the electronic sound of today.

The single features the vocals from highly sought-after vocalist Jinadu. With collaborations to date with Black Coffee, Hot Since 82, Eli Brown, Jamie Jones ad Dixon. He is also known as one half of The Beauty Room, a luscious, 70’s Americana inspired project that employed the skills of Grammy award winning engineer Peter Henderson (Supertramp) and string arranger Paul Buckmaster (David Bowie, Elton John) to great effect.

In original form, deep kicks and a rubbery low end form the bedrock on which sparse percussion and bright and airy synths work their magic. Jinadu’s ethereal vocals add to the air of mysticism which becomes a maelstrom of melancholy energy. A real meeting of minds with far-reaching creative potential. On remix duties, Fur Coat goes deep and musical creating a deeply hypnotic version, while Armonica slows the tempo and toughens the low-end grit with a haunting Reese bass. The release also features an ambient reimagination and shortened radio cut.'

A respected name within the progressive house fraternity, Forerunners makes a welcome return to Meanwhile with his first full release in the shape of the "Ancient Methods" EP.

Operating out of his Arizona home, Brenden LaBonte has consistently found himself at the forefront of a distinctive underground house sound with his Forerunners soubriquet. An advocate of the quality over quantity' maxim and a sound that is full of maturity and quality, the US artist has seen his music allied to a plethora of high-profile imprints that include Anjunadeep, Silk Music, and Black Hole Recordings.

Now returning to GMJ and Matter's flagship imprint after a spell-binding interpretation of Mike Isai's "Home" in July 2021, Meanwhile's 21st release sees Forerunners open his "Ancient Methods" EP with the mesmerising title track. Full of melodic poise and rhythmic interplay, a driving beat and tight off-beat percussion heralds a dynamic opening before a mechanic bassline and syncopated groove create the foundation for delicate motifs to lilt their way across the 8-minute track with ease. Delay-infused effects and pitched synth add to the aural atmosphere at the breakdown as a sustained pad holds sway throughout to create a subtle tension and hypnotic vibe.

The complex rhythmic foundation that infuses the oxymoronic "Light in the Darkness" is a powerful forerunner for the deep melodic melange to follow. As running bassline and swirling effects build, a dizzying breakdown of looped arpeggio provides sonic intrigue and bright, uplifting zenith. Exploding into the third movement, an hypnotic melody sits against oppressive bass and rhythm to create a magical track.

Continuing the dark rhythmic narrative of its predecessors, "Valis" provides another sonic tapestry filled with texture and innovation. Beneath a ticking percussive groove and chest-thumping kick, an effects-laden and pitched oscillator bassline reveal themselves across the 6-minute offering as a mesmerising arp creates a powerful melodic presence in the mid-range. Cid Inc's Replug imprint grew immensely over the course of 2011, with 10 releases that included outstanding productions from: Nick Muir, Jamie Stevens, Deepfunk, Juan Deminicis,  Alex & Filip and of course Cid Inc. As 2011 drew to a close Darin Epsilon has become one of the most in demand DJs in North America, his Perspectives radio show just celebrated its five year anniversary and his 'Metamorph' release on Mesmeric would have to be one of the top new school progressive house releases of the year.  For Replug's first release of 2012 and 20th overall we see Darin making his debut on the label with his 'Bahamut' single which comes with remixes from Cid Inc. and Fiord.

Darin's 'Bahamut' original presents some pulsating rhythms and clattering percussion elements which forms an irresistibly futuristic groove early on. The liquid smooth sheets of synths push the composition forward as a second wall of low end frequencies adds even more drive. This leads to a drop that's filled with unique chord changes and acid styled synth mods that bubble with a smouldering character.  As the tension builds to a boil it quickly gets stripped and filtered away before the groove reappears for a smooth finish.

It was what you would call a banner  year for Cid Inc. in 2011, with remixes of Quivver, Barry Jamieson,  Deepfunk and Mohrr for Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat label Henri's popularity grew as legions of new fans become hooked on his revolutionary sound.  2012 promises to be even bigger with Q1 projects on the way for Natura Sonoris, microCastle and Iboga. Cid Inc.'s 'Bahamut' interpretation comes with an enthralling bass line that's got a hum of electricity and ultra sonic pulse about it. As the drive pushes forward the introduction of some light airy pads and effervescent atmospherics creates that veritable hypnotic swirl that your dance floor should be completely entrenched in. The main drop sees the 'Bahamut' lead slowly appear as the aerated synth lines build some quick dynamics towards the compositions sizable apex.

Barton & Hayden Strom; brothers, studio partners and seasoned producers whose achievements to date encompass 4 albums, a fruitful international touring career and an array of heavyweight productions spread across their three monikers Antix, Fiord and Triangle. Here under their Fiord moniker they've delivered a stripped down, dark room monster of an interpretation. A heavily infectious bottom end with a resonating pulse combined with intricately placed electronics and sizzling synths create a groove to die for to close the package out.

Returning to production duties for the 4th release on their evolving Meanwhile imprint, GMJ and Matter present "Eldarin". A pair of remixes come from Sri Lankan and Colombian talents.

Hitting their straps on numerous occasions across a broad and celebrated career, GMJ and Matter continue to make waves in Port Phillip Bay with their distinctive and renowned musical style. Joining forces on over 50 production credits for the likes of Anjunadeep, Balance Music and Proton Music, GMJ and Matter's combined talent is a formidable force. Now reprising the success of their "Lost on Origin" and "Gauntlet" EPs for Meanwhile, the pair come together for a third time. "Eldarin" is a typically dynamic affair with all the hallmarks that have made the pair such revered names in the underground dance scene. A glorious bouncing bassline groove and ticking hi-hat percussion lays the foundation for densely textured pads to weave their way across the near 9-minute offering. Redolent in trademark delays and reverb tails, subtle motifs meander across proceedings before an extended piano sequence cascades across the breakdown. A multiple award-winning DJ, Subandrio Sinhawansa has become a force to be reckoned with via the undulating musical tapestries that represent his work behind the decks. A seasoned traveller with performances across Middle East and his Sri Lankan home, contemporaneously, a high-profile production career finds Subandrio with over a double-century of credits to his name as he joins the catalogues of some of the finest imprints including Darin Epsilon's Perspectives Digital, Cid Inc.'s Replug and Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music. Now making his Meanwhile debut, the Subandrio remix is a highly intelligent reworking of "Eldarin" that retains the rhythmic and bassline integrity of the original while introducing a swathe of new melodic material that bristles with arpeggiated sequences that shimmer in delays and subtle new phrasing. The result is a commanding rework that launches powerfully into the post-breakdown denouement with heavy beat and strong dancefloor character.

Kamilo Sanclemente and Dabeat represent another high-calibre musical pairing. From Cali, southwest of the Bogota capital, the duo has been a mainstay of the Colombian underground dance movement and beyond South American borders. With successful careers under their respective solo guises and amassing over a half-century of combined productions, Sanclemente and Dabeat have found their music allied to some of the industry's finest blue-chip imprints that include Mango Alley, UV and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden. A Meanwhile debut finds the pair on scintillating form as chugging, head-shaking rhythm creates a vibrant backdrop for fizzing white-noise washes and sweeping pads to roll across the Kamilo Sanclemente and Dabeat remix. Gentle melodic flourishes caress the mid-range with style and panache as they rise in prominence through an open filter that ushers in a sublime new melodic groove in the third movement alongside a high-energy counterpoint motif and striking cadence. The result is a highly original reworking with its roots firmly in GMJ and Matter's original.

Creating a new musical language, "Eldarin" speaks volumes about the talents of GMJ and Matter, Subandrio and Kamilo Sanclemente and Dabeat.
