Extase

Another experiment in using physical modelling sound synthesis. This time the model used is a system of 4 inter-connected plates. The plates are excited using variable length sequences of pre-filtered digital impulses. The frequency of the impulses is set equal to one of the first twelve mode frequencies of the first two plates. These sounds are then layered to create chords and hence the harmonic structure of the piece is derived entirely from the spectral content of the first two plates.

All sound synthesis done in SuperCollider, all numerical math done with the help of Python (using Numpy and Scipy). This is a stereo reduction of the original 24-channel version.

Extase 3 (Version)

Another piece (stereo version) made with a self-build physical modelling library for SuperCollider and Python. The model used for the sounds consists of two plates which are connected to each other through 6 stiff strings of different physical proportions. 

The different spectral content throughout the piece is achieved by exciting different strings and plates and, by picking up the response of all individual objects at different locations along their surface.

The excitation signals are made up from different types of filtered noise and impulses (FOF synthesis) and an attempt has been made to model / compose different types of environmental sound scenes purely using sound synthesis methods.

All sound synthesis and sequencing done in SuperCollider using Unit Lib and my custom physical modelling lib.

Extase 2, 3 & 4

Beta 2 has been mastering the art of production for years, blending jazzy elements with cinematic depth to create truly immersive Drum & Bass. He’s long been one of the most exciting artists on Metalheadz, so it’s a real treat to see him back with a fresh three-tracker, ‘White Dahlia’.

The title track takes a different approach, stripping things back with organic, live instrument-driven sounds rather than the usual synth-heavy style—it’s a real breath of fresh air.

On the flip of a limited edition white 10” lathe cut, ‘Kerb Kruncher’ throws it back to the early 2000s with raw energy and gritty textures, delivering some proper nostalgia.

Closing things out, ‘Carter’ is classic Beta 2—deep, moody, and dripping in atmosphere, with those signature noir vibes and rich double bass tones.
